This is a teaser of the basic concept for the new asteroid system that will be implemented in YVaW, just one of the projects we've been working on to change the basics of the game. In EaW/FoC there was always an annoying feature when asteroid fields were placed on the map. Asteroid fields are supposed to deal damage to ships passing through them, but they all would deal damage to ships passing above or below them, as if placing an asteroid field was actually like placing a column of some invisible damage-dealing field in the middle of the map. Such a thing became a nuisance when I was making maps with more exotic asteroids field designs that weren't a simple flat layer across the map. As the mod will have ships at various heights it would look extremely odd if they were damaged and the field was hundreds of meters above/below it. So the team took to remedying this issue, and these are the results.
Additionally, we have implemented a new asteroid system. Large asteroids can be broken apart into asteroid fields, which can be further reduced into dust clouds. The fields and clouds will damage non-Vong ships but heal Vong units when passing through, as they can absorb and use the materials for repairs. You can see in the video that the Star Destroyers are only damaged when passing directly through the fields; when above or below, they receive no damage.

A simple solution to an annoying problem, we believe this will make gameplay better in a way that would feel natural and intuitive.

cool feature, the asteroid fields have always annoyed me when nearly the whole map is full of them^^

There will be multiple shapes and sizes—we started with a simple one for testing purposes.

To be honest these cruisers have escaped lightly compared to that ISD that had its entire command bridge structure disintegrated when it got hit in the Hoth asteroid field during The Empire Strikes Back?
ISD in the movie was without shields.

How damned stupid of them, how can anyone not put up his shields when passing through a massive field of asteroids?!
In my opinion, the Imperials in the films were shown as bunch of kids, who aren't capable of doing grocery shopping in the mornings, let alone fight a war, and it really ****** my off. But I'm getting of topic, this new system, will revolutionize the way FoC is played completely. Nice work, very nice.

Space is a very dangerous place...
We wanted to portray this as accurately as possible. Large asteroids will act as obstacles and roadblocks to maps. They can be targeted and destroyed, spawning debris fields. Debris fields damage most ships, but some ships such as stealth or smuggler ships are capable of navigating and hiding within the debris fields. Debris fields can be destroyed which spawns dust clouds. Dust clouds only damage fighters.
This multi-level damage system will provide strategic challenges to space maps. Vong players will be able to slowly heal in debris and dust clouds , plYers will need to decide if they send fleets around asteroid obstacles or blast through them . Only heavy weapons will damage large asteroids. Spotter and spy craft can hide in the dust clouds providing long range capital ships with an advantage. Players will need to decide which types of ships are better for certain maps: smaller weaker armed strike craft or slower heavy capital ships.

Question. Since the asteroids will be on separate levels will we be able to move ships up and down in space to get around the asteroids?
This ability is not currently possible in EAW/FOC, but ships will spawn at different heights randomly

Anyone else make some connection between the ISD's and the triangle ship from asteroids? The brave men aboard the SS Triangle will never be forgotten!

So is this using the spawn object on death feature as well as the thing that damages ships but also allows you to filter which ships it dies damage?
Could this technique be used for ship death clones too?
I hope this fixes how the craft travels because EAW has always had retarded as **** pilots for the ships making them go in the opposite direction even if there was space for them to travel for some reason they felt they needed to turn around and go all the way around the map.... isd's are notorious for it...
