Yeah this is much better. The vanilla one looks like some slinky that got dipped in slime.

Same function, coded to auto fire like turrets instead of requiring a special ability however
Wouldn't auto-triggered ability that would allow player to switch it off be a better solution?
Ships can only have 2 special abilities, and the AI only uses the first one, never the second one. We have special needs of using these 2 ability slots for other reasons.
If we did not make it autofire, enemies would never use tractor beams, and they were used heavily during the Vong war on all sides
Hmmm... I'm really sure I once saw a mod where they implemented more (like 4-5) abilities. But I couldn't remember the name if my life depended on it... :\
It is possible for the player, we can easily do that. The trick is getting the computer ai to also use all the abilities.

Would it be possible to have each ship (or all the ships from the same class) randomly (or some other way) given an ability from the "ability set" of that ship's class each time they go to battle?
Or maybe assigning the ability at time the ship is being built?
That way you can have all the abilities, but at the cost of needing more ships.
Oh, btw, I've just noticed. Why is the selection circle so big?
There are ways of adding/unlocking abilities for a ship during runtime. But half of them are dodgy at best (which means at times crash the script engine if you are not overly careful) and the other half boils down to unlocking an already existing and attached ability, but then you're having the same problems Burntstrobe already elaborated on, there is no way of choosing from a set of abilities to display. At last none I know of.

here's to hoping you can tractor your own ships to help the larger ones move forward better. (happened a few time in some books if i remember correctly)
Imagine having a fleet of Star Destroyers use their tractor beams to propel an enemy cruiser into their space station (or some other big ship)!!!

well i was referring to how a ship would actually grab onto a ship of similar size. seeing as the gravity of the two would be equal it would actually pull the ship that had the tractor beam forward with it.
that said new republic and rebellion pilots would use reflective (like a ties wing panels after it was blown up) wreckage to break tractor beams

Are there any I should skip because I know that there were some New Republic era books that didn't fit like Crystal Star, I think I might be wrong though
All the NJO books are good, they tell only the story of the Vong war. It is not like the other new republic books where you can skip
