Behold the Yuuzhan Vong Army! This mod adds the Yuuzhan Vong Race as a playable faction and all units of this era. We are a community of modders working for the greater goal, so anyone who wants to help or support us is welcome!
I don´t even dare to call this a rework of the old model. Let´s say I was very excited about starting a mod and all that so had a strong compulsion to show my creations even thought they were...well, not worthy to be presented. But that´s not the case of this new Matalok!
I hope I managed to keep the "Mon Calamari" appearance and still giving it a clearly Vong look. About its role: the Matalok is a heavy cruiser usually about 1km long armed with sufficient Yaret Kors, Dovin Basals and docking arms carrying some Coralskipper squadrons. Since these ships were mentioned to be able to enter a planet´s atmosphere we gave them a Vong equivalent of rudders which can be seen on some other vessels (for instance on the Advanced Scout ships). Concerning its abilities we´re not that sure yet, only some sort of grabbing tentacles representing tractor beams are planned so far. So if you have any ideas, we will be glad to hear them ;)
Seregruth
So I've been wondering, but why is it supposed to look like a Mon Cal ship?
short version: it´s one of the few "something-saying" (not "oval", "spear-shaped" or "alien looking") descriptions used by the wookipedia to describe a Vong ship... so it should be relevant imho. although I´m not sure from which source does this information come from:(
Mon Cal ships are designed to appear to be graceful, organic vessels, similar i guess to large aquatic animals. Vong ships ARE organic. using Mon Cal ships as a basis makes sense from a modding standpoint, as you have plenty of models to play around with as opposed to having to make a brand new model
the novels stated that from a distance, the silhouettes of these ships from a distance looked similar to the MC80B Liberty class cruiser. This allowed an attack wave to approach without the GA preparing the necessary defenses needed.
The ship is a battleship, so it is large and armored, containing more guns than the standard Miid Roik, but less fighters. Although slow moving, the ship was described in the novels of having a capture ability. Tentacles could be unleashed from the sides of the ship that would grasp on to enemy vessels. The mouths of the tentacles would bite holes into the ships allowing Vong troops to travel through inside of the tentacles and into the enemy ships (think of how an earthworm has an opening at both ends ;) )Once inside the enemy ships, Vong warriors would kill the crew and scuttle the enemy vessels.
Ideally, we hope to have a mechanism in place where the Vong are able to launch a tractor beam effect where the tentacles would grasp onto an enemy ship. The Enemy ship would be destroyed, and the Vong would earn "credits". Vong "credits" will be a form of blood sacrifice to their gods. More to be explained later on this subject.
Thank you for the responses everyone :)
Cool design. Nice work!
As for ability...maybe Assault mode? Nothing really comes to mind.
I kind of disagree with "standard" special abilities... it's not a bad idea, but enough ships have those already...? Something crazy would be amazing, the only problem being that we have to think of something crazy...
Thinking of something cool isn't the problem, making it work ingame now THAT is the problem with this game :D
Agreed. But over the years of playing mods, I've seen people add abilities that I never knew were even possible at all. It's amazing how far this game has come. Really shows creativity and how much people love this game! :D
I'm not trying to knock your comment, I'm just interested - could you give an example? :)
Well I don't want to start advertising other mods, but there was this old mod called "Sci-Fi at War", created by Spinobreaker, and is exactly as it sounds: all these different sci-fi series put together and fight each other. One ability added was this "Jump" ability for Battlestar Galactica units, which essentially let you instantly move a unit from one location on the map to another. Maybe someone's done it before, I don't know, but that's the only mod I know that had that.
Youtube.com I know this video is pretty old, but has the ability being shown off. The mod was originally removed from the site because it had BSG in it, but it's back up without it.
That's Very awesome...
Assault could work. Maybe an "increase dovin basal power" or something. Will these be as weak to torpedoes as they were in the books?
since most units have plenty hardpoints it´s not possible to destroy them with a single proton torpedo as described in the books. and honestly I´m quite glad it´s this way. don´t want to see my creation being destroyed with a single shot of a fighter...
Well yeah, I know that, but maybe make it have an extra weakness to proton torpedoes or something.
I reckon this is more feasible...? :)
The Mc80v XD
The Mc80 has got "power to shields". Maybe you could give this one a slight auto-repair for a few seconds.
Btw. Looks nothng like your first moddel. Great job;)
this project is just brilliant :D
Just a thought. Dovin Basals were used for shields and propulsion, weren't they? So an "Increase Dovin Basal Power" would make the ship more shielded and faster, right??
Yes, I like that, maybe "energy to dovin basals" (power seems a bit mechanical - these are biological remember). Such an ability would indeed increase the ships "shielding" and speed, hopefully at the cost of Yaret-Kor firing rate?
I thought that would be pretty cool (maybe not exactly for this ship, but definitely for a Vong ship somewhere). Thanks for coming up with a more organic name for the ability too.
Well I originally wondered what (if any) chemical gives organisms their strength, and (I'm no biologist) I settled upon oxygen, but then, seeing as Dovin Basals survive quite happily in the vacuum of space, it probably isn't that... so energy had to do! ;)
Maybe call it "Human Sacrifices to Dovin Basals." It sounds sufficiently Vong-disgusting that their shields and propulsion would be powered by their sacrifices lol ;D
well carbohydrates, sugars, protiens, you know... the stuff that makes up food. depending on the organism the balance needed and such will change but it's usually stuff like this. plants use just sugars created from photosynthesis, animals use a lot of protien, and minerals as well.
I imagine it depends whether dovin basals are plants or animals... coral are a mixture of both: they are capable of catching food but also require sunlight to grow... they may not work in the same way... who knows :/
I thing this reforms were necesary for some models it's a great work as always :)
if you have anything particular on mind, let us know. it´s easily possible that we overlook something, since every rework means 2 things: 1)you did your work badly 2)you have to spend time on something what is not really necessary...
i wish i could sugest something for a special ability, but i get the feeling that you need to know the story to do that :(
but anyhow i did manage to come up with something based on what you guys said about it, what if it is invisible if it is on the edge of the area of sight of one of you vessels or whatever, like if they are 30% into the enemies vision they will not be seen, anymore then that and they will be seen, fits how they where mistaken for allied vessels.
also maybe you could use this same mechanics for other stuf that was made to look like something else and confuse the enemy (if there are any).
