Invasion Stripes were alternating black/white bands of color that were quickly applied for the sole purpose of faster visual recognition during the midst of an immense battles.
In the movies, and most of the novels of the SW Lore, battles were relatively small, mostly based around fighter squadrons and a handful of capital ships. For years, the Death Star 2 battle at Endor was one of the largest engagements, with an entire Imperial Sector fleet still only poised against a single rebel strike group, albeit a large one with noted 4 HomeOne class heavy battlecruisers and several MC80s. The Vong War changed this.
During the Vong War, it was no longer just small isolated battles occurring here and there throughout the galaxy... it was a full on galactic invasion. By the end of the War, 2/3 of the entire galaxy laid in complete ruin. The 'front line' ran from the Unknown Region to the entire opposite side of the entire galaxy in the fringe of Hutt Space. Fleet battles were often time massive, where every ship from every faction was called in for aid and assistance.
With this many ships battling and the carnage of war raging as far as the eye can see, it became important for certain vessels to dawn easily identifiable markings so that Allied Crews could easily find their command ships, and that special task forces could be easily spotted to aid in their defense.
Invasion Stripes serve this purpose. While many of the pilots knew they were not going to be making it back from certain missions, they knew that marked ships were crucial to the grander needs of the war initiative. EVERYTHING must be done to protect and assist a marked ship. Different factions will be using different markings for different purposes. Bothans used the notable Blood Stripe marking to indicate their command ships, the Galactic Alliance used Blue/White patterns to identify their lead strike groups, others simply relied upon standard black/white banding to easily be visible.
