Xen Rebels aims to bring the best of MMORPGs, FPS, strategy and simulation into a single, coherent game powered by the groundbreaking Source engine and running on the most flexible RPG engine yet.
Game administrators will not only be able to DM, but entire new game dynamics and economies can be created on-the-fly to satisfy a need.
New, fast and powerful server code allows Xen Rebels to run a decentralised MMORPG, relying on servers assuming controlling status over 'galaxies' and individual servers running 'worlds'. Hopping between worlds will be as simple as jumping into a teleporter in the map and selecting your destination from the dynamically updated list. Controlling servers will run a special 'XEA Centre' map allowing players to jump between galaxies.
In-game remapping under Source allows individual clans to claim territory in a very real sense, be it through war or diplomacy. A complete lack of integral governance or even a 'money' resource allows for totally open and evolving gameplay. The world may evolve into a democracy or into anarchy, and you may be the one to change it.
Xen Rebels ultimately focuses on creating a rock solid foundation for an evolving world in which the Half-Life universe can be played out over a period of months rather than minutes, driven along by the (obviously secret) plot conveyed to players through NPCs. On a smaller scale, skirmishes over territory, minor wars, trading issues or just plain politics ensures that Xen Rebels will be the most varied, dynamic and user-driven Half-Life 2 mod ever.
