Originally developed in 2011, VP Laboratories is a mod that aims to tell the story of a long-forgotten Aperture Science test subject who suddenly wakes up during GLaDOS's absence to a chaotic mess that was left of the enrichment center. An experimental personality core from the early days of AI development is temporarily in control of the facility.
The mod has been resurrected in 2017. A full reboot is in the works featuring a new storyline with different paths, leading to three unique endings.
This mod takes place twenty three years after the events of Portal 1 where a "VP Lab" AI is temporarily in control of Aperture Science.
Hello, this is "SilentRT" speaking. If you happen to be a follower from way back, you may not recognize me. That's understandable as I've changed my nickname several times since 2011. The nickname I used at the time was "vovapered", and you may still find references to it in the articles and screenshots. Just wanted to let you know it's still me and I haven't given the mod to another dev team.
Looking through the projects I've worked on there's always been that one I haven't finished, "VP Laboratories". Back in the day, when I started the project I haven't had much experience with Source Engine modding, so I relied heavily on other people's help. I formed a team and for half a year we were working on the mod together. I don't remember much from this period but I recall we had a full reboot sometime during the development and we released a demo version before development stopped. Recently I've been thinking about resurrecting the mod. I've made an update for the original demo version if you want to try it out, and I'm planning to continue work on the mod.
As next to nothing is left of the source files for the mod, I'm afraid a second reboot is inevitable. However, I now have a new vision for the mod, so it will differ a lot from what would have been released back in the day if we were to continue work on the mod. The new version, being the mod's third incarnation, will feature a non-linear storyline with multiple routes each leading to it's own ending. You'll be able to choose for yourself if you want to explore the facility, escape or fight the AI in control. Speaking of the AI, it's concept has changed quite a bit. VP is an experimental AI that was developed long before GLaDOS and got scrapped as it lacked stability. After GLaDOS was shut down by Chell, VP was the only available option for a temporary replacement. After idling for several years, VP wakes the main character by accident. Could an old AI that does not have any clue how to control the GLaDOS-optimized facility handle conducting tests?
The new team consists of my friend "Juice0390" as a beta-tester and me, "SilentRT" as a lead developer.
