Final Fantasy VII was an amazing Squaresoft release in 1997, and still captivates many as "the greatest game ever" by a generous number of people. Being personal fans of the game, DirgePunk took the initiative to completely remake the game from the ground up using the Source engine. This will be a free mod, and will hopefully fulfill every need and want that the followers have. We're completely open to suggestions, as well as applications to join the team and make this happen. Thank you for supporting or even showing interest, we hope you enjoy the game when it is out.

Features Include:

The complete recreation of The Planet!
Real-time action-oriented combat mechanics from first person!
Newly translated dialogue from the Steam release!
A more open and interactive environment to explore!
And much much more!

Relive the joy of playing Final Fantasy VII for the first time, all from the satisfaction of the Source 2 engine!

Crossroads

News 5 comments

As I'm sure most of you know, shortly after my announcements and updates for bringing this mod back to life, Square Enix announced they're properly remaking Final Fantasy VII themselves!

Hooraaaaaay~~~

So at that point, I coincidentally had to focus on some life changes that took me out of development for a while-- I figured, "Well, everyone's going to get the remake we wanted anyway, I don't really have to keep working on this pipe-dream any longer."

Of course, I didn't intend to leave everyone hanging; again, I did have to manage some life changes. So I figure at this point, I'm at a crossroads:

Should I continue development on VII, or work on a smaller-scale project with a more realistic goal and release probability (as a one-man team)?

Let me know, guys... I don't want to waste my time on something that'll be outdone by the real deal with how much work that entails. I've got some fun ideas for smaller projects that are considerably more doable.

As always, thank you for your support.

-Avary

Glad to hear! It'll take time (prolly a lot), considering there isn't any clear idea of when Source 2 will be released to the public, but hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

You're aware they are -finally- doing a remake of FF=VII yes? Just wanted to make sure you know, as doing a mod like this may or may not be grounds for trouble now. I don't know their legal stuff just letting you know.

development has been ceased i guess,

i was the main mapper that was working on the first mission map for this mod. The trainstation level.

I had to combine the progress of the map with my school and real life stuff. So i hadnt enough time to map 100%. So it went pretty slow the progress. It seemed that dirgepunk did not like that things went slow. And we had a animation dude, though never seen **** of him. I dont know how far this mod is till now, iv quit the group month ago, because you cant expect someone to commit every single sec in his life on the mod. Mapping supposed to be something as a hobby for me.

Something like this would probably work better as a mod for Alien Swarm rather then HL2: EP2 or the Source SDK bases. Also Source can do third person just as good as first person.

making it in the alien swarm sdk takes a LOT of custom code work.
Serious, a LOT.

Like, the marines jumping for cloud would need custom code, and making custom code to simulate the jumping requires some advanced coding you know.

Dont think its easy to just mod it in the alien swarm sdk.

I know this is wishful thinking, given the history of FF7 mods making it past conceptual choices and basic level design (i.e. never), but I want to wish you guys best of luck on this.

I would love to see a remade 7, and this certainly would be an interesting way to do it. I don't think it's impossible on the EP2 engine either - EP2 has a larger size limits, and don't Source-based games support traveling between levels? All the areas with the exception of the world map, are quite practical in size for being made into source maps.

They would require a LOT of detail to make them match the original background quality though, so that would mean if you were to make them look that good, only higher end comps would do well with it (which probably won't be much of a problem now)

2 Crazy ideas for way later just popped into my head, Maybe as a workaround for FF7's huge overworld and source's limits - perhaps you can split them into individual maps? Certain areas would be traversed and then, you would go through a cave or an event like in the original, then it would load the next world area. Hell, if you want to put the highwind as something to fly over the world, you could make a mini overworld that has the whole world, and when you land, it would load that individual portion of the world.

Second cool idea could be coop, where other players take control of party members like Tifa or Barret.

But then again, I'm getting way too ahead of myself for now. I would still love to see an MP FF7 FPS. IMO that's a smart thing your doing, as it is easier to provide something like that first, and smarter - that way, functional MP will attract people and if it's good peak their interest, so they will take more interest into waiting for your SP portion.

That is what they are going for. They want to do their own version. Doing a carbon copy remake, although not impossible with better graphics in 3D, you arent really creating just copying. Don't get me wrong I still would love to play a remake but that isn't what these guys are going for.

You will still be playing in the FF7 universe and presumably following the same storyline but this allows the guys some scope to add new aspects and interesting gameplay. I mean the multi-player mini-game sounds fun. I hope they release some updates soon.
