Urban Terror is a free standalone first person shooter based on the Quake 3 engine. It offers a realistic contemporary combat mod with an emphasis on playability.

This game started life as a mod in 1999. You can now download it as a standalone game thanks to the open source release of the Quake 3 engine in 2005. Urban Terror is a product of the Ioquake3 project, an enhanced, souped up version of the Quake 3 engine with better graphics and sound and added features.

This is a multiplayer only game that has all the usual FPS elements. It also features some innovate gameplay elements such as ledge grabbing, wall jumping, and power sliding, variations on in-game acrobatics that allow a player better physical maneuverability. Another notable addition is ’stamina’, which of course also brings with it the ’medic’ character that can help heal other characters and/or increase their stamina.

This is a very good game with extremely well-crafted levels.

I've been playing Urban Terror since mod version 1.27 and while other games may have more eyecandy, Urban Terror has much more playability. Vote for Urban Terror.

This game/mod is pretty neat. Like others have stated, it does seem a bit dated and stretched beyond it's engine limits but the dev team still seems to have done a decent job with it. I've played this game off and on over the past 4 years and still find it to be a nice change from the other games that seem to be popular these days.

For a Quake 3 mod, it has to be one of the better ones available. It is faced paced (most of it's game types) and with the addition of power-sliding and wall-jumping, it makes the mod all the more fun to play.

Pros:
Fast paced
No weapons to buy
Power sliding and wall jumping
Quick loading time (since it's based on the Q3 engine)

Cons:
Some of the maps seem poorly designed
Engine stretched beyond it's limit maybe (or poor coding/mapping?), quite a few FPS drops during the game that I don't normally see in the newer games or engines.
Lack of Anti-cheat. This is a MUST for any online game. I see that this latest version is still compatible with Punk Buster but from what I've seen, no one plays on punk buster enabled servers anymore.

Overall, I'd give this mod a score of 8 out of 10. The cons that I've noted certainly matter but not really enough to stop me from joining a pub every once in a while to get away from the newer games.

Graphics don't make gameplay, some gamers will never understand that, I guess. Fancy and expensive hardware is a wonderful thing, of course not everyone is upgrade to ride the wave of technology. While graphics are quite dated, the gameplay is solid and many are always returning to the game. The community and development team must have done something right since 2000 in order to keep many gamers still interested with many new and pretty gamers coming out.

I have been around since 1.27 days and Autoaim's postings under multiple accounts are the whining of a poor soul who was banned from the Urban Terror forums for posting links to racist video games and making racist comments. Don't listen to his "fantasies". This is the only place he can take out his frustration at not being allowed to abuse the Urban Terror community.

The playability can not be beat, played since 1.24 release, and it just keeps getting better!!!
