I guess it's true that time passes faster when you keep busy. I certainly didn't feel those 2 years pass. So much has happened for me, and I am sure things have changed for you as well.

For those who do not know, I have spent these 2 years working on the game Insurgency

Since the game's release we have been constantly releasing free updates and free DLC with new maps, new weapons, new game modes and improved content, the game has evolved in so many good ways, and it's been a blast to work on this, it has many of the things I love in a game, mainly tight gunplay and intense action and effects.

But that's not all I've been doing during this time, many of you have been sending me messages and posting comments, asking questions about Chapter Two and the future of Underhell. Some of you may think it's dead.


But it's not

Underhell has never been developed in a traditional way, I can realize that now that I am part of an actual game development team. It's been created in a very specific way which allowed me to make sure all the aspects of the game matched a certain style and fit in a certain way, and even if I had to make sacrifices or let some things go due to lack of personnel or time, the formula has worked so far.

It just takes a lot of time.

And that's really all I need from you at the moment, some of you have been asking to send donations, but I would rather not. It is true that from now on I want to be able to pay every team member that will work on this project, and therefore the financial side of things is a new concern, but this is all part of the process of making a game, and it will be dealt with in due time.

All this cool concept art has been created by Paxilon, who I have decided to hire after seeing the art work seen above. She was able to bring to life designs for future characters that I have had in mind for years now. There is plenty more of Character Concepts, but some of them would be spoilers, so here are a few of the non-spoiler ones.





The future

I am currently working on other projects that is true, and I am not spending as much time working on Underhell as I used to, that is also true. But that doesn't mean it's dead, and that doesn't mean I've given up.

I've said this many times, but after a while people stop believing it, so I have to say it again.

I will not stop working on Underhell, and Underhell is far from dead, and as long as I am alive I plan to keep working on it whenever possible.

News are and will be scarce for this, simply because I do not like to post news when there is nothing substantial to talk about. So it is possible that there will be silence from me and the development during some time, and that's the way it's gotta be until the game has made more significant progress.

Chapter Two is the biggest and largest Chapter of the game, in terms of size and scope, it has the most characters, more environments and quite a few memorable set pieces scenes. I want to make sure it is done right, and I'll take my time and the Source Engine is getting old.

I am developing this in a way that if we were to switch to another engine, we wouldn't lose the work that has been done so far, all these precautions and slow and careful building takes time, so that really is all I ask from you. Time.

I don't work in a AAA studio on this, in fact at the moment it's pretty much just me, and that is the way it's supposed to be for now, so all you can do is wait.

And we all know how hard that can be.

In the meantime, there's another game that kept us waiting which releases today. So let's go play that.

Hi guys, i'm getting this issue. Underhell was working fine the other day but when I come to load the game today it says "Your license for Underhell has expired" I've verified all files for all source based games and still not working. Any ideas?

For me, when playing this, I see a lot of similarities to F.E.A.R. The relation between Jake and his wife is pretty similar to the relation Pointman and Alma had in the F.E.A.R. series and just as an idea, it could be implemented gameplay-wise as well but the point I'm trying to make here is, well... would you ever consider talking to Monolith about Underhell? Get them to help or maybe take on the project as one of their own? Hell, you could get the people over at New World to help as well. Not sure why you're worried about money, I'm sure most of them would willingly do it either way, if not for the experience but for the chance to expand their portfolio (not sure what's the point of a game company with only one game). I mean, come on, at this rate you'll most likely never be able to finish it, or not be able to develop the game to its fullest potential (could not implement gameplay features due to time, budget, etc, and restraints like that) which would be easily fixed with some smart thinking like that.

Just think about it, I've seen countless projects like this get abandoned due to those reasons but none of them where really this ambitious or had this much talent behind them and it would just break a part of me to see this not fully realized to its true potential or never even get there.

Besides, the community would be happy to help through stuff like crowdfunding and so on. It doesn't have to be now or even later on but it is an option and there's nothing wrong with taking it.

Just some friendly advice, you can take it or leave it, I don't mind either way but like I said, it would break a piece of me to see this end up dead in the water.

Other than that, best of luck with the project and also Insurgency, grabbed it on a sale myself and it is pretty much one of the best shooters out there and tons of fun, plus I love the amount of updates and that they are substantial as well (e.g. HUD overhaul, compass, other gameplay overhauls, rebalances, etc.) and even free content added with patches as well. Anyway, enough about Insurgency but yea, that just makes me that much more hopeful for Underhell and would make me that much more sad if it would fail.

Anyway, just my 2c, wish you the best!

There's something I've discovered in this game, while tweaking around the console. I've decided to go on modifying the SWAT models using ent_fire !picker addoutput "setbodygroup ###"

And as much to my shock, I've found out that most Npc_Citizen models have an amputated bodygroup. Why was this never implemented?

Here's the screenshot of what I found out:

The SWAT guy could sure use that head-blown model, because I've noticed that they frequently get shot in the head during combat. And that no arms/leg amputation would suit very well when the NPC was hit via grenade.

Other than that, the only NPCs that I saw that got their limbs cut off are the PMCs (Npc_combine_s) and Infected (Npc_infected) which is unsatisfying because most (if not all) NPCs should've this kind of stuff in this good game.

I hope that this feature will be fixed in the new Steam release though! Will be supporting this mod 'til my last breath, seems impossible. Yet I'll try!

I, too, am a developer Source Engine games
and I say so it is the easiest way to create as many different characters. Since kodit each individually require a lot of effort time and nerves. This is a more sound approach to this work.

I had no clue you worked on Insurgency Mxthe! We used to be friends on steam years ago when I was technobanana I helped you bug test a mod you were working on before underhell. Kinda mad that you worked on insurgency my current fave game when i knew you all those years ago!

Try to verify game cache or just reload the save. I read that somewhere when I googled the problem. It happens to me whenever I alt+tab or go into my steam browser.

Underhell is one of those mods that comes along every so often, that makes you look at retail and remember when they used to make good games like this...and saddens you a little that the industry can't turn out gold like this these days.
