Tour of Duty is a realistic team play mod for Halflife by Valve Software. The game is set at the height of the Vietnam war, between 1967 and 1973 allowing you to relive the conflict fighting either for the United States Marine Corp (USMC) or the Viet Cong (VC)/North Vietnamese Army (NVA). The mod features realistic weapons of the period, and a number of gameplay styles including control point capture, demolition or bombing missions, capture the flag/radio/codemachine and escape and evasion are the currently coded styles. We are also planning on adding rescue missions, where you'll rescue a general or famous figure. We've added support for some vehicles that players can ride into the action in, with guns 'ablazing', right now, we have a huey that players ride to the bomb target zone, and have plans for PT boats in future levels.

The Tour of Duty team is hard at work preparing for the 1.1 release, so we wanted to update everyone on our some of our progress. Todays update will highlight some of the code updates and new features that we have ready for you (but of course we are keeping a few surprises up our sleeves :D )

The most requested feature by our fans was prone, so we began working on it right after the last release. I am happy to report that all coding for prone is complete. Here are a couple of screenshots of players taking advantage of any cover they can find by using prone. (screenshots removed due to 404 errors)

We have also done a major rewrite on all of the gameplay code to make Tour of Duty more fun to play and to give mappers more flexibility. Some (but not all) of the changes we have made are;

  • mappers now have the ability to combine objectives from several gameplay styles into one map so they can now do things like have a bombing objective on control point maps,
  • new gameplay style called bb which is bombing with re-enforcements
  • medics are now more realistic in several ways, but you will have to wait to find out how :P
  • numerous bug fixes and enhancements to existing features

This is by no means a complete list of the new features, it is only a teaser. Expect more in the near future.
