This is an amazing Mod, those who love total war and LOTR. This Mod is published by TW_King_Kong here on ModDB and is the leader of 'Third Age - Total War'

The positives of the Mod: Here you can play all the good things from LOTR and have great war if you will be humans or orcs that is entirely up to you. There are many different types of soldiers and amazing made maps! This is a Mod that has been a big surprise for me, when it came.

I enjoy the upgrade soldiers, such as Gondor soldiers with armor that one can'll develop it to get more armor to his soldiers. Map game is incredibly fun, plus you can play all heroes from LOTR like, Boromir, Frodo, Sam, Faramir, Legolas, etc. The quality of the mod is good and the view and provide a good experience of the game itself.

The negative of the Mod : It can be a little difficult for some people, playing history section to put it on hard for it to work. Mod and some problems with uninterrupted game play as a great war in a simple path that the game can end by itself if you take any wrong or too much of one thing. Some have also had trouble installing the game because you have to have Medieval 2 Total War Kingdoms or Gold edition.

So my full scores for this Mod is - 9 / Which also means this Mod is Great!

Excellent mod. A lot of love and talent went into this project. Beautiful models and textures and well-conceived structure. Next to Battle for Middle Earth 2 (which has better skirmishes, but a weaker meta-game), it's the best LotR strategy game out there. I especially like the large number of factions available and how each has their own personality. It also has music and cutscenes that are incorporated in a very professional way. I'll probably never play Medieval 2 again, since this mod is vastly superior to the core game.

My only (minor) complaint about the mod has to do with how it over-reaches regarding difficulty. The creators gave the AI some rather ridiculous advantages, such as continuous spawning of units, extra resources each turn, and a few other perks. On medium difficulty, you can get swamped by AI spamming even as your own economy plunges into debt, allowing for no new recruitment of units. Also, there are a few questionable scenario set-ups that will lead to frustration for many--such as starting Gondor off in a two-front war with Mordor and Harad. Fortunately, if you are willing to dig around a bit in the data files, you can fix all of this, making the mod near perfect. Much of the code is clearly marked and fairly easy to understand, so you can tailor it to your liking.

Aside from the occasional black screen or crash to desktop, I have had a great deal of fun with this mod. The creators should be highly commended for their accomplishment, which reveals a good amount of talent, hard work, and vision. Many thanks!

A stand-out mod for M2TW. The quality of the units, campaign map and AI is all well above par, though there are a number of minor imperfections that mar the mod slightly for a lore enthusiast like me. All in all though, a fantastic achievement, and is well recognised given its popularity and success in the ModDB 2010 awards.

Come the next release, however, I am sure that any imperfections as I see them will be forgiven with the release of the custom settlements. Minas Tirith? Yes please.

TA:TW is quite possibly my favorite mod for any game. The most impressive part is probably the worldmap: to make such a detailed map of Middle-earth takes a lot of dedication, and the team deserves a lot of respect for that. Next is all the new units: the skins for both heroes and regular infantry are incredibly detailed, and the battles look as if you've stepped into the movies. The soundtrack from the movies certainly adds to that feel.

There are only a few issues I have with the mod. One is the AI's penchant for pulling vast armies out of nowhere, but I suppose that can be excused as balancing. The second is the long distances between settlements, meaning that moving an army or sending reinforcements can take five or more turns... although I suppose this can also be explained as a balance thing, to make you think twice before launching an atack on far-off territories. The third is that trade, which was such a critical part of the vanilla version, is all but useless in TA:TW, since it only applies to a small number of settlements.

Overall, despite a few flaws, this mod fully deserves a 10/10 rating. It's a mod I've enjoyed playing for the past few years, and will continue to enjoy for years to come.

absolutely brilliant! only problem is that some of the key cities are not the same as in the books/films, that would probably be asking alot but it would be a deffinate 10/10 if places like the Hornburg, Minas Tirish, Rivendel and Minus Morgul all like they should be :D

many thanks!

This is by far the best mod for a PC game I have ever come across.. Before this I always played an Emergency 4 mod called "Los Angeles Mod" It was very good and I would consider it an 8/10.. This game goes straight out of the window and deserves an 20/10!. Unfortunately I am only allowed to rate 10/10 maximum.
Since I was a boy, I did not see the Fellowship of The Ring or The Two Towers; however at school all the lads talked about it and pretended to play "Lord of the Rings" instead of toy soldiers and war. When the Return of The King came out I decided to watch it with my sister and her boyfriend and found it amazing and the BEST! film I have ever seen to date. I then on DVD was given by my parents the Fellowship of The Ring and The Two Towers and LOVED THEM TOO!. It was such a shame that Boromir died in the first film! :( and the siege on Helms deep in the second was STUNNING!.
Anyways, In this game, VERY REALISTIC! TW_King_Kong and the Third Age Team have created the WORLD MAP OF MIDDLE EARTH TO STUNNING PERFECTION!, You can fight anywhere, go anywhere you want, be anyone you want or most importantly DO WHATEVER YOU WANT!!!!. I remember playing Lord of The Rings: The battle for Middle Earth when it came out and loved it!, Just liked I loved Rome Total War, and still do today(Having gotten through two copies already and need a third!).
You can play from the Silvan Elves of Mirkwood to the forces of Mordor or Dale. And there are currently 14 nations you can play!. Elf, man, dwarf, orc. who will you be?.The mapping/and graphics are VERY GOOD! as this game is created on Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms, and will ONLY WORK WITH THE EXPANSION PACK!. The skins of each model and character is so beautifully done, from the soldiers of Gondor, to the Orcs of Mordor to even the hobbits of the shire. This mod is a DEFINITELY FOR ALL LORD OF THE RINGS FANS!. I remember wishing that I could One day have the chance to play across all of Middle Earth and now I can!! ~Chris C James
