Thief 2X HD Mod v1.2 is out!

"T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age" is an unofficial expansion of the game "Thief 2 - The Metal Age".
In T2X you will take on the role of Zaya, a female merchant sailor, who is undertaking her very first visit to The City in order to trade and meet her cousin who she has not seen since she was a child. Little does she know of the dangers that lurk there.

Just run it through FMSEL as any Fan Mission!

(Thanks to Ricebug for the FM-conversion of the expansion!)

If you have also installed the "Thief 2 HD Texture Mod" you have to deactivate it: Rename the "HDMOD" folder into "HDMOD_".
Don't use this mod in combination with the "T2X - Necro Age Mod"!

Thief 2X HD Mod FAQ

Some Notes:

The mod requires a full installation of the original Thief 2 game, patched with NewDark which is included in the Tafferpatcher!

The HD mod requires a lot of graphic and CPU power!

- added HD textures for all original missions
- added new vegetation
- added new AI mesh-skins
- added improved objects
- added new water and lava textures
- added new torch and fire flames

As excellent as the first two updates to the zombies were, this one is another significant improvement. I don't know how you keep doing it, and it impresses me again.

Adding the hideous "peeled back" gum-line and teeth heightened the sense of menace - YES!

The only thing that keeps catching me in a weird way are the two, nearly perfectly symmetrical "blood tracks" coming down from its eyes. In most of the shots, my first register of what I was seeing was of a bloody smiley face - a Wal-Mart type smiley face.

I'm confident that if you redirected the trails so that they didn't connect with the mouth the way it does now, that the "Wal-Mart effect" would be eliminated. Perhaps shortening one of the trails, so that it doesn't connect to the mouth, would also produce results that were also free of the Wal-Mart effect.

I'd also strengthen the presence of the nostril holes some more.

I feel that this skin is SO close to being done.

You are VERY good at showing the wet, underlying anatomy of areas that have been stripped or decayed-away of surface flesh. I'd play this card again, and I feel that it would be quite creepy to see some tissue removed from ONE of the eye sockets (perfect symmetry=beauty, while asymmetry pushes the opposite psychological effect), so that the lower eyelid is absent, so that we can see some of the inner workings of the eyeball system. I wouldn't extend this damage all the way down to the cheekbone, but I'd get somewhat close to it.

Here's a site that features a head-shaped cake that's designed to melt grotesquely. The author did a GREAT job on it, and if you look towards the bottom of the page, you'll see images that you might find inspiring in regards to depicting a stripped eye socket area:

If it's not too much of a chore, could you try these last few suggestions for us, and let us see the results?

Could you try out a version where the zombie's few teeth are a little more apparent? I realize that right now it's been modeled to look like it just feasted on a bloody snack, but psychologically, I feel that players will be more frightened if some of its teeth were more visible.

Also, what didn't strike me till just now is how large the zombie's nose looks. It's reminding me of the now-deceased comedian Jimmy Durante's face, see below if you don't know who he is:

Perhaps you could try adding two decayed nostril slits to its face? Who knows, perhaps one of its nostrils is "plugged" up with dried and clotted blood, or of some other type of yellowish mucus showing? You're certainly good at showing those nasty fluids, put some more in there!

Another improvement on an already very impressive looking skin!

The wetness of its decaying flesh evokes a strong sense of revulsion in me, and the view of the zombie's backside is almost more gross than its front - I'm extremely impressed!

The only thing that caught my eye in a negative fashion was its pants, but it's hard to get a good view of them from the screenshots provided. They look like they're made out of a plaid-like pattern. I don't know about you, but when it comes to clothing, plaid doesn't scare me too much, but rather it makes me giggle.

Also, some of the commentary that I directed to andysaj of the "Mysteries of the Sith" mod for "Jedi Academy" might well apply to what you're doing here as well. He's working on Darkside-zombies, and my advice to him was to weather and beat them up a bit, as well as other suggestions. You've done a GREAT job so far, but perhaps some mold and fungus on their flesh/clothes, and if its possible to spawn more than one skin for a zombie, perhaps follow through on some of the suggestions that I give here:

The last two comments for the image are mine.

I'm very excited by what I'm seeing here.

I was thinking more of textures such as Dead Space,
Since the symmetry would be less noticeable if moving the zombies.

Considering just how limited the zombie's mesh is, you've accomplished a TERRIFIC skin for them.

In regards to BlackBat's suggestion of adding blood on them, I advise avoiding it if the blood spatters are going to be displayed symmetrically on the zombie's body. Symmetrical blood-splats automatically look fake, like a poorly executed Rorshach test wrapped around a humanoid form.

If the mesh's design "traps" the textures to only ever be symmetrically displayed around the form, then I would still attempt placing blood on the hands and midway up the forearms, with perhaps blood smears on the thighs. These areas sort of make sense in regards to expecting some sense of symmetry, but it's hard for me to imagine putting blood spatters on the chest and ribcage and not have it end up looking strange if those spatters ares symmetrically reflected.

I'm still in awe of these updated zombie shots. The closeups look fantastic. Thank you for your hard work and for sharing the previews.
