Darkness... My body hurts! Or is it my brain? The explosion! I remember it now. Maybe I'm in a coma? Or even worst, I may be already dead... Everything is so confusing... Zombies, monsters and ghosts from the past are filling my mind... Oh God, so many memories mixed with my dreams! I can't even distinguish them anymore. What if my entire life was just a nightmare? But it felt so real... Wait, what's that sweet voice? Sounds like a nurse! THAT is part of reality, I am sure. Now if I could just concentrate on this voice and try to wake up...
It's definitely an excellent mod for Halloween. The gameplay is dinamic enough, and, as the story, gets better from time to time. I liked the fact that there are different zombies skins, so this way it's not monotonous. The story also sounded interesting; although I couldn't understand it completely, it remembered me a lot of Frankenstein. Graphics are not perfect, but is because is an old mod. Although the dogs are simple reskinning of houndeyes as the skeletons are from vortigaunts, I didn't care too much about this, because they fit perfectly with the places they spawn. The ending is so movie-like.
I highly recommend this mod. In fact, every player that likes HL mods should know about this one. It's very balanced in ambience and gameplay, with good graphics (generally speaking) and good story.
I had an older review on here but that one was very harsh and based on an opinion I had quit a while ago. Now that I've gotten around to finishing this mod I think I should give it a proper review.
One of the oldest half-life mods. Hitting the scenes just a year after the classic game released. This mod isn't too terrible for its age. The level design is nice and there are some disturbing moments within as well, which for survival horror is always good to have. Though some good comes out of this mod it isn't absent of many flaws. The voice acting, oh man is the voice work bad. The mad scientist Dr. Franklin is just cringe inducing, and the monsters just came off as comical rather than scary, especially with cliched lines like "eat brains". Gameplay wise it isn't bad, plenty of nice weapons to get a hold of. However the mod really starts to drag on during the later levels and even gets redundant at times. The final boss was a neat idea but I think it emphasized a bit much on trial and error.
If your a hardcore fan of half-life and its modding community, than give this a try. Be prepared a for a pretty long play through and rather poor voice work, but some fun should come out of it.
This mod was unbelievably bad. It has poor voice acting, maps that lead you in circles, and seems as if it were made before Half Life was even released.
To its credit, SOME of the models and maps were creative, but even then, you'd just see the same base enemy with a different model.
The voices of the zombies, particularly the skeletons, were just laughable. I wanted to mute the game before I died laughing at their ridiculous voices.
The story was all over the place. I could follow it as much as I could the maps that circled back to their start.
I think there were very few parts I actually enjoyed. The last boss fight in the helicopter was surprisingly creative, but got very annoying as you ran low on ammo.
The only things that stuck with me after this mod were a bad taste in my mouth and that gosh-darned song in the credits. Knowing that this was released on the Sega Dreamcast-literally a year after HL, no less- shocks me. Seeing the reviews here that say it's scary shock me. The fact that this mod is so highly praised shocks me. I can understand, it was made with their best in a short ammount of time, but that's just it- it was a rushed game and surely feels like it. It got no better or less chessy as the episodes continued. I'm sorry, but I really just didn't enjoy this mod.
