The Trapdoor is a portrait of Jonathan Burke, a lonely servitor to an unseen and diabolical master. As isolation, incarceration, and debasement inevitably erode what's left of his sanity, his repressed memories begin to surface and the insidious menace of the trapdoor grows in his mind.

Version 2.0, the irrevocably final version, is out now. Complete with 3 re-play modes and all major bugs fixed. Details below (may contain spoilers):

Version 2.0

  • Fixed the issue with the looping voice-over when multiple pieces are sent up in the elevator. Thanks to Raghn Ryker and Bendigo for pointing this out.
  • Fixed the issue with Burke not prompting the player to look upstairs after the 4th feeding, and to look for the pages after the 5th feeding.
  • Fixed the issue with having to do another feeding to trigger the cutscene in certain circumstances.
  • Fixed the almost impossible to get note in Seperation Anxiety. Thanks to ThatCrazyShaman for pointing this out.
  • Reduced the likelihood of pigs sometimes getting stuck on the elevator gratings.
  • Increased the chance of specific voice-over lines playing in the end-game, suggested by ThatCrazyShaman.
  • Enhanced the page-turning sound between queued-up voice-overs, to make it more obvious where one note ends and the next one starts.
  • Tweaked the end game to make it harder to accidentally get the "game over" ending.
  • Thanks to Ashtoreth and ThatCrazyShaman for pointing out a couple of typos.
  • Potentially ready for use with Mudbill's Amnesia mod loader (currently a work in progress).

Please help me. I've fed the creature four pigs and it says I have to go back upstairs to the dining room, but I can't find the dining room. I've walked everywhere and I cannot find anything.

Hi Chris, that's because it's not a custom story, it's a "full conversion" mod. If you read the instructions in the read me file, it will tell you how to install and play. Try that and then give me a shout if you get stuck.

Check your momentos... It should be telling you to "find a way to feed the Thing upstairs".

Here is the story of how the "game over" ending came about: (no spoilers)

Throughout the game, any time Burke is "killed" by an enemy it is supposed to be ambiguous as to whether he has actually died and respawned, or whether his hallucinations overcome him, he passes out and wakes up in another location. After all, he usually wakes up beside Boney, with his sanity restored.

Near the end of the story, it is possible to be "killed" by enemies, but if Burke were to wake up beside Boney at that point in the story, then it would ruin the pacing and could potentially break the story. This was more likely to happen in earlier versions, and I saw it a lot in Let's Plays, so I decided to fix it by making it a more final end.

So instead of waking up beside Boney, if Burke is "killed" by enemies at that point he now wakes up in a different predicament, immediately before an unavoidable permadeath. Roll credits. That's the "game over" ending.

Oh yeah! i gottcha! i acompplished it in my first run but i doubted if it was the proper ''game over'' ending, thanks for answering MrBehemont ;)
By the way your mod is excellent! And playing it i remembered the horror that shiver me when i was a little child and i saw ''The Trap Door'' chapter where the splund emerges and break havoc in the cartoon. Creepy as hell to my little mind.
