The Specialists is an action mod created by Filippo "Morfeo" De Luca and Lorenzo "John_Matrix" Pasini, built on by a strong willed community and the first multiplayer game ever featuring slowmotion.

The standards of the First Person Shooter still apply but are augmented by an intuitive stunt system, slow motion action, hand to hand combat and an array of melee weapons, customizable firearms, particle effects and the ability to play from a third-person camera.

After a very long waiting period, the team behind the creation of the Half-Life mod “The Specialists” have unveiled the latest version of their game, TS 3.0.

For those unfamiliar with The Specialists, it’s an action mod created by Filippo "Morfeo" De Luca and Lorenzo "John_Matrix" Pasini, and built on by a strong willed community. The standards of the First Person Shooter still apply, but are augmented by an intuitive stunt system, slow motion action, hand to hand combat with fists and an array of melee weapons, customizable firearms, and the ability to play from a third-person camera.

The Specialists 3.0 has a number of interesting gamplay modes. It features the traditional Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, but also contains several unique play types. The One Mode, for example, pits one super-powered player against an onslaught of other players, who try and kill “The One” and take his place. Last Man Standing works like regular DM, but players sit out when they die until only one player remains. And, new to 3.0 is Capture the Briefcase, which puts a new TS-style spin on the old favorite, Capture the Flag.

The new version modifies the way TS’s unique Kung Fu system works, creating the most efficient and exciting hand to hand battles yet. This release also brings weapon balance more into line, and fixes bugs that existed in the past, which people familiar with the older versions will be glad to hear.

The Specialists 3.0 is not just about fixing the old, however. TS 3.0 has a whole host of new features. Two entirely new guns, the Contender G2 and the Skorpion, have been added to the lineup, giving the game more than 30 customizable weapons to choose from. In addition, many of the old maps have been updated with improved textures and layouts, and five brand new maps have been added. This updated map list makes use of new map entities, such as snow and rain, as well as a unique set of particle effects created specifically for use with The Specialists to create visuals effects unheard of in the Half-Life engine.

I guess it's worth mentioning that the spiritual successor to the mod is currently on Kickstarter:

That project is not from the original creators, just a part of the old team. I'm not even sure its correct to define it as the "spiritual successor" but whatever.

Hey Morf, "Spiritual successor" is being used loosely here really, sure it's not actually a sequel or update to TS but the base elements are still there and it does get some of the old TS players talking about it, it's mostly marketing.

As for other mods in the genre, AHL's Source mod didn't go down too well when they released that although I think they might be looking into reviving it with a bit more effort this time, Distraction also tanked despite it being quite fun with some great maps it just seemed to lack passion from it's dev team to keep it going, neither had great coverage on ModDB or any other site for that matter so they never took off because there was very little word of mouth, DA is getting some regular updates here on ModDB showing that it's actually being worked on and that gets people talking.

Vino dropped his work on DigiTanks as well as some other projects and has been focused on DA for most of his spare time, progress is kinda slow but there's a couple of other guys lending a hand with the code now and there's usually a new version with some tweaks here and there every couple of weeks, still quite rough around the edges but it's getting there and once there's some adhesion in the gameplay then the graphical aspect will get some focus, some of the old content producers for the later versions of TS have even popped up, Schmung has lent the team the source files a couple of his old TS maps and some guns and Flakk is doing some weapons as well along with some new and old faces doing maps.

I saw your comment about it being a cash grab, I assume that was in reference to the Kickstarter, it's been admitted as a bit of a dumb idea to do it this early for that much, it just seems that today with out Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Steam's own Greenlight system to get noticed, your game/mod/whatever fades into obscurity.

You tried it yet? Would be cool if you popped in and dropped some feedback from the legend himself.

I got Max Payne 3 over the holiday sale on steam. The Multiplayer is badass, but it made me miss this mod so bad. Reminds me a bit of TS and I wish people actually still played this mod. 60% of the servers are RP servers which is retarded, and even then those are always empty. I'm going back to college soon, but I hope I can get a bunch of friends together to have big game once I get some time off. It anybodys game let me know because it would be awesome to play this again.
