Actually, you'd be surprised how well you can fake sun/moonlight with spotlights, though the shadow quality tends to suffer from the sheer size of the lights.
I've also played with scale to make the castle and towers in the distance look farther away than they really are, which makes the whole area feel more expansive.
Could you pm me a picture of how that area in the pic looks? Just what the picture shows, not the whole area.
Really good outside environments, I can see way more talent and skill here than what you usually see from outside areas in amnesia custom stories/mods.

Cool outside area! is the slanting wall a new static object, or is it just using other objects?
The map was completely done with just using the main game's static objects, except for the vines of course. :)
