Apparently a lot of people think that the hub areas, particularly Downtown, are too spread out. It takes too long to get from point A to point B and whatnot. As a result I present a minor mod that took me far too long to make.
In the modified maps you will find links around every subway entrance, and when you click on the links they will take you elsewhere. At each elsewhere there is a link, the clicking of which will take you back to the subway. The links are labeled for your convenience.
I tried to follow a somewhat coherent pattern in deciding where to put a link, which led to some overlap and empty spaces. For example I decided to put links near gates out of districts, businesses and bus stops, this leads to redundancy when a business is right next to a bus stop. Or a business is near a gate. Or when O'Mally's is next to Rent 'n' Repent is next to a gate. It also led to a lack of coverage if there were, say, a bunch of condemned buildings in the south west corner with nary a gate, bus stop or business around.
Also, putting a link at the helipad was just silly (it's almost as fast to just walk to it from the subway), but I'm not convinced there's anything wrong with silly. Actually the slums are probably overlinked in general. Given that there were only two functioning businesses (Voodoo and Helicopter) I decided to do the subway maintenance and such as well, realizing at the last minute that there were three such things, not two. At which point I accidentally picked a name identical to an existing teleporter, which confused the hell out of me when I tested it.
Presumably this will take all of the fun out the game and eliminate any inclination to look for things or take a look around (why walk to the Llama Temple when there's a link right here?)
Installation
1. Rename the following files files in your TNM\Maps folder: 20_FCDowntown.dx, 20_FCCorporate.dx, 20_FCSlums.dx, 22_FCDowntown.dx, 22_FCCorporate.dx, 22_FCSlums.dx.
2. Extract the six similarly named files into your Maps folder - if it's asking you to overwrite, you did something wrong.
3. Start a new game of TNM or load a savegame where you haven't left Phasmatis' apartment yet.
Uninstallation
Delete the six files listed above and change the names of the old files back to what they were. You may get away with doing this even if you're in the middle of a playthrough, the changes simply won't occur until you start a new game or transition between day 1 and day 2 (that is, until you go to DXI).
