Looks good ! I'm looking forward to seeing the completed model. One thing though... The binary writings look obsolete (to me) given that we're talking about the 41th millenium. Maybe some wires and/or lights instead would do it.

Why would the binary writing be obsolete? We are after all talking of an extreme religious organization that worships knowledge and science and have a very particular way of dooing it. :D

Trikiss point of view is valid, but the choice to use binary as a ornament element can be justified in a lot of ways.
the religous doctrine can be one of these many justification.
binary is surely a dead and so obsolete language BUT it doesn't mean its existence and usage have been forgotten. Only high ranking individuals among the Mechanicus could be aware of its existence and able to use it.

and binary, in its 1/0 all/nothing , full/empty concept could well be considered as a sacred language....

see ? everything is about the way you explain things.
our written system, if we talk about humanity, is around 5k years old, we have forgotten a lot of it...what will be remembered of english in 40k years ?? nobody can make projection that far....only one thig is for sure : War Is Eternal

Maybe valid if we are talking of a generic science fiction faction but this is warhammer and the mechanicum. They are not star trek. :P

If i remember correctly the tech priests even communicate in something called "binary cant"

How could the mechanicum think binary is sacred, after 40k years of discoveries and scientific progress ? It is just a relic of our time. There are paintings all over the world that are 40000 years old, and we don't see them as sacred. They sure are extremely valuable, but as a reminder, a legacy of what and who lived there before.
The only use i see for binary in the 41th mil is the one of a relic and a sign of recognition among the elite of the mechanicum, along with a way to wrap themselves in mystery in the eyes of the common individuals.
Which, i agree, perfectly adds up with the model :)

Anyway, however grumpy or critical i may sound, i am not stubborn : i just couldn't picture an imperial knight running on a binary microcontroller :)

"There are paintings all over the world that are 40000 years old, and we don't see them as sacred"
"we"...off course, every individual share this point of view.

i just couldn't picture an imperial knight running on a binary microcontroller :)
...because you are assuming that if binary scripture are engraved on microcontroller case/box then it implies that this microcontroler is a binary one. false logic. again.

seriously, are we arguing over hypothetical fact depicted in a game ?

All technology is sacred to the mechanicum.
The dark age of technology was long ago and most are forgotten or forbidden in the grim darkness of warhammer.
Hell they pray over and anoint their machines with sacred oils. They use servitors instead of basic AI because ai is evil! Etc. I can easily picture alot of what the mechanicum dooing beeing based on binary just because of their strange advanced+primitive way of dooing things. Also they do infact speak in binary cant so having binary symbols kinda makes sense imo.
Anyway lets just stop discussing binary. :P

The our common known AI - Artificial Intelligence, it is not evil. Like Machine Spirit for example, which can even self educate.

The evil w40k AI = Abominable Intelligence Wh40k.lexicanum.com where the conceptual difference is that it can self-enhance.

VERY BIG difference.

I know Jones. Thats why i said basic AI. :) But they use alot of servitors instead of simple programming. So it seems to me that they take their bias toward actual AI a bit further than it needs to go. Take the legio cybernetica for instance, not real AI even there, just a bunch of algorithms. Yet they are much frowned upon by the rest of the mechanicum. And machine spirit is something supernatural, definitly far more than some lines of code. :)

IIRC Battle Automata of the Legio Cybernetica have a wetware (i.e. biological in origin) CPU.

All of our digital computers run on binary code. The size of the binary code is what makes them different from each other (16 bit computers are now severely outdated while 64 bits are currently in use).

Unless analog computers got a significant development in the 40000 years that separate us from the settings of Warhammer 40k and actually replaced the digital computers, binary will still be as valid at the time as now. That said this mechanicum mod isn't even related with 40k but rather 30k as the units are related with the Horus Heresy books.

Still the 40k setting doesn't specify the type of computers used so people could assume they are either analog or digital ones although considering some of the descriptions I would suppose digital computers so binary code would be their base.

They use a version of binary, as I recall, from the Lords of Mars Trilogy.

Very well done JL.

I thought Leonard GOOG would be the best texturer for DoW. But now I'm not sure anymore.
