During work on the mod there have been implications towards implementing (or an attempt to implement) a cover system...

My question to everyone is: Do you think it can work?

Anyone think it is technically possible to crowbar a cover system into the mod/game?

What about implementation in other (Star Wars, etc. -centric) mods?

I don't hold anything against the mechanic, but in this case I don't think it is possible within the engine. And if it is, it probably wouldn't work very well...

Thoughts?

Sort of. It would be linked turrets whose weapons are set to use the pilot's weapons - still highly conceptual and untested.

Huh... A "Riding Shotgun" mechanic... Wouldn't have thought of that with a gun pointed to my head. Well played!

Now tested - working alright, you can only use your first primary and secondary weapons, and AI don't use the system:

I used a single, grounded flyer instead of two linked turrets; I'm not sure turrets would work for this. We could relocalize the pilot and copilot positions to "Crouched" and "Standing" or something similar, and of course use a custom animation for the in-hiding portion.

Could cover items simply be made so that when you crouch you're impervious to any shots fired your way, thus actual cover (if this isn't already the case in most places)? Though that idea for the turret/flyer with your weapon is genius!

that Xfire.com link is quite amazing - really simple premise but it it a great idea for cover! Thx for sharing that Fiodis
