Any tips on actually making your troops respond to commands while defending a siege?

This actually makes a pretty big impact on gameplay. What's the point of having a commander if you can't tell your troops how to fight? This really ****** over my defense of Calembel, which features a city defended by an outer and inner wall. The orcs have already busted through the outer wall and are charging you and your men up a long ramp. The inner wall has one of its doors busted off the hinges (why?), and the other is partially stove in. There are archers up on the walls here shooting down at the enemies as they approach up the ramp, but no matter what, all of your infantry compulsively charge out of the inner walls and down the ramp - headfirst into the enemy.

This makes defending Calembel (and I assume other cities) retarded. We were attacked by an army of 680 orcs. With my 75 troops, the defenders numbered a little under 300. Even with odds over 2:1, there's still a reasonable chance at victory when defending, especially when the attackers are Morgul Orcs!

Unfortunately, my 150+ infantry were slain quickly on that bloody ramp, and despite my cunning swordplay and single-handed combat of an armored troll, we lost the city on the second wave.

I don't know about commanding troops during sieges but you should be able to avoid these kinds of situation by fighting instead on the field. As elves you have men who are a lot stronger than the really crap orcs and can just shoot them all down. There are 2 sneaky tricks to making this work beautifully.

Firstly when facing massive hosts you want to flee from them and then pursue again when they stop to chase to try and get only 1 commander to follow you. This way you split up the host and can take it 1 commander at a time. The second trick is an evil archer exploit which is almost like cheating. You basically have your archery firing line as usual and shoot at the enemies until they get too close. Before the enemy comes close to do damage you need to approach the edge of the battlefield and click action on "leave battle" option (NOT press tab). This form of retreat does not force extra casualties upon you unlike tab method but it still takes into account all the units that actually died in battle, which should be mostly the enemies as you just shot them like hell. Now just join battle again and oh look the enemy is far away again and all your ammo is back. Repeat to ensure victory.

This only doesn't work against strong enemy archers but moria and dol guldor do not have that advantage. Gondor and rohan archers are actually the best due to the bugged bows so best to get them for maximum success.

First of all, thanks for making this. Amazing stuff for a Tolkien nerd to be able to play. I had a lot of fun playing as an elf from Lothlorien and kicking *** from start to finish! I've experimented with a few other faction starts and styles, and my current challenge is winning as Gondor with a difficulty rating of 155%.

Has anyone had a lot of success with Gondor? I'm about to scrap my second attempt. I focused on putting troops into Cair Andros/Lossarnach/West Osgiliath as they are sieged earliest. We held Cair Andros and West Osgiliath longer than I've seen in any other game, but they have since fallen.

I do pretty well fighting. I can even take on an enemy commander if my troops are well trained and able-bodied. But the other commanders of Gondor just kind of suck! They run out and get ****** and then loiter around with 15 tower guards and do nothing!

With my THIRD attempt with Gondor, I'm going to boost the defenses of Cair Andros & West Osgiliath, then press hard against the Umbar. My guess is that they are easier to take on/out than Mordor/Haradrim.

Any advice is much appreciated :)

I'm only using Cirdil as a hero as well.

I am surprised you're having any difficulty with gondor. Only challenging races to play with are any of the saruman-allied races once you get the hang of the mechanics.

Gondor faces 4 enemy factions and a ton of leaders. The trick is to start small doing quests and fighting small parties and then leveling up your training skill to train more and more competent troops. Make sure to focus your attacks on 1 or 2 factions to weaken them down and eventually destroy them. By the time you reach level 25 you start having full armies of heavy cavalry and can take on caravans/prisoner wagons 60 vs 200 with 5-10 casualties. The fact that mordor has a pathetic army that can be layed waste so easy by gondor elites makes it so easy. Harad is a bit harder but even it can't stand to the mighty of gondor heavy cavalry. Don't bother wasting time trying to hold Cair Andros - focus on leveing your character and your army. Get surgery as well so that your elites never die.

Trolls are the only thing that can save mordor. Try taking out every troll either personally or through archers. You can use couched attacks to kill them or kill them on foot using a very long lance or an overpowered gondor bow.

Playing with gondor is a bit like playing with rhun. Except your army is actually the best army in the game. And your enemies are have a ****** army. And you have an obscene amount of recruitment locations.

Interesting! I've been doing it all wrong then. So you suggest just letting Mordor overrun various locations during early/mid game? (West Osgiliath, Lossarnach, etc.)? I'll have to try it out

Well to be honest I am not sure how you even got a difficulty rating to 155% I am on 84% and would be 101% if I disabled automatic block (which doesn't matter really since I always use shields) and all my other options are set on the hardest.

Right now I am on day 112, level 29 with a training skill 9. So far mordor could only take cair andros from me and now my army has attained enough power to take out their 200 armies commanders so they really have little hope. Once they get beaten enough times the faction just dies and all their capturable territories become yours. The corsairs are beaten to just over a thousand and khand and harad aren't far behind. I even got to a point where using an allied party which was battling an enemy party I consecutively defeat 3 commander armies in a row by having split up like that 1 by 1.

The key to success really is a strong army of heavy cavalry that will allow you defeat massive armies that greatly outnumber you. That is why I think it most challenging to play for saruman as his factions lack any sort of heavy cavalry while sauron has kataphracts, falcon riders, numenorean horsemasters, and fang cavalry.

Once you get your heavy cavalry upgraded you can take on armies of 100 with 1 or 2 casualties it becomes a slaughter. Archers are quite nice too but they should used as support against advancing trolls as wargs can actually badly hurt them. I would only ever recommend upgrading into infantry for fort defenses/sieges. They have no advantages over cavalry. They are slower, more vulnerable to enemy cavalry and archers and make battles longer with their slow speed.

Amazing mod! After playing it so much though there are obvious issues with some items. Elven bow only 25 damage? So by upgrading woodsmen archer you are making him worse by replacing his dale bow with **** elf bow?

I have no way of accessing the forums so I can't even tell anyone. I made a few tweaks fixing these kinds of 'bugs' myself. Download if you like.

ya. kind of bothers me that any bow coming from the hood of lothlorien would be worse than a "crude gondor bow" that does 40 dmg. I get that the dank *** bow (which Galadriel gave to Legolas in TFR) must be won with influence, but still...

That "dank *** bow" had 36 damage. Gondor bows which archers have had 42 damage. Rohan bow which skirmishers have had 43.

The reward bows were utterly broken as bow of bard and enhanced eagle guard bow had 32 and 36 damage respectively. I used an item and unit editor to try and balance these issues as well as keep to lore as I am quite a lore geek as well... And yes, that means elves actually get strong bows.

yeah, i've noticed too that even a crude gondor bow does 40 dmg, 15 higher than an elf bow straight from lothlorien! Now, if you get high enough rank and influence, you can get a special Galadhrim bow from Galadriel... This thing is awesome. I think it's the same kind of bow she gave to Legolas in The Fellowship.

Ghaladrim bow is weaker than a rohan strong bow which was the strongest bow in the original. The bow damages and shield lengths are the most glaring instances of nonsensical stats.

All elven bows had 25 damage. It is ridiculous. Fell moria orcs had the same power bows as the strongest elven elite while even the weakest rohirim bowmen had the most powerful bow in the game.

I updated the fix a little fixing some of my own errors here and there and fixing a lot of things wrong with the orc unit trees. Changelog has the full list. I am sorry that there was a crash but the truth is for me the game crashes (with or without the fix) very frequently. I don't know if it is just the game or the fix I will play it more and see if I experience this issue.

This mod is utterly incredible! Everywhere I look I see the four years it took to make this world. From the orcs to the elven armor. The detail is staggering, every scene lovingly crafted, almost every armor textured to perfection. +5 The mod is well balanced and the immersion is total and complete. It immediately reminded me of an Elder-Scrolls Lord of the Rings game. +5 Now sadly there are the bugs. Several quests are broken and some of the enviromental textures (elven bridges and Gondorian stone…
