Jedi Academy is a great Game but since it is from 2003, the graphics need an overhaul - for that the fan of the force may have the best gaming experience possible!


So what does this mod do?

This Mod aims to replace nearly all in-game textures (which are quite low res compared to the textures in games nowadays) with improved hi-rez textures faithful to the original style of the game and/or with custom textures all of 2 times (some even 8! times) the original size. It is perfectly safe and very easy to install or uninstall from your system because it will not alter the files in your installation folder directly.
More detailed instructions will be included in the release(s).


NOTE
: This mod will not improve meshes or models, it is merely a texture mod. Also the id tech 3 egine does not support normal-maps, so please don't request me doing those, it's not possible for me, only someone who knows how to compile maps and how to write shaders for this game can achieve a somehow normal-map-like effect by baking the normals into the lighting of the map, as i've read somewhere.


Why you no help??

I do not have the resources to test my mod on different systems apart from my gaming rig, so if someone would kindly help and post his system specs and the framerate or general performance when using my mod i can provide minimum spec info for other players. Now I don't think you need a strong pc for this to work fluently, but your graphics card should probably have 128 megs of ram. but this is just an assumption!

If there is someone who has experience with the id tech 3 engine and its modelling tools and would like to help and take this mod on a new level - please contact me, i'm quite positive on improving the models and meshes too which would then be a total cosmetic overhaul mod improving all graphics throughout the game.

This is my first mod project, all done on my own so far, so I hope people will like it and use it.


IMPORTANT!

The 0.3 release is a combined pack including all other packs released prior to version 0.3.
I recommend downloading 0.3 + 0.3h & 0.3.1b (the newest release) instead of the seperate packs for the full experience. It is very big but recommended for download!
DELETE ALL OTHER PACKS WHEN USING THE v.0.3 + 0.3h & 0.3.1b!!

I will upload each modded level as a single file aswell as combined in a mega-pack because that final release will probably take up a lot of space, 1 gig or more.

Info for fellow modders: Some raw Textures come from Mayang's free
Texture site at Mayang.com Every texture included in the mod is either heavily altered, custom made or an altered version of the original textures. Of course I permit usage of all of my custom made textures in any altered form in other packs and/or mods as far as it is no-profit and combined with proper credit to Mayang (?) and me. :D This does not apply to the altered original textures - credit and thanks to Raven for those!

Patch 0.3.h is ready - texture glitches begone!

Some have reported issues with missing environment textures of the Hoth-level retexture. This is a fix for that issue but the pack also includes some more improvements.

The problem was solved similar to the fix of the Chandrilla-level, by resizing the huge 8192px textures down to 4096px (plus improving on the realism and making the textures more fitting the Hoth we all know from The Empire Strikes Back). Also I fixed some tiling issues which were still present on the ground texture of the first retexture of Echo base. This is an addition to Full Version 0.3 and 0.3.1b, so please use all three packs together for the best experience, I put the links at the end of this article.

Some textures in the mod wouldn't work, they either come up as greys in gameplay or straight up crashes the game.

I think it may have to do with me still using XP and all it's oldness.

I am unfortunately unable to upgrade due to the expensiveness of the latest OS, and the fact that i'm living in a place where lots of things are more expensive than they would in other places.

Perhaps when you've finished the mod, you would make a lite version of the mod for the technology-lacking.

Well, anyway, here's what i encounter, and what i did to overcome these issues on the 0.3 and 0.3.1 version.

- monitor.png is shown grey in the Danger map, copying the overhauled texture, pasting it to the original monitor.png, and then saving it to another .pk3 fixes this issue for me.

- Hoth's h_outground.jpg/h_outground_2.jpg/h_outground_3.jpg would show up grey in the map, or crash the game when the map is loaded, changing their sizes to 4096x4096 fixes this issue.

- Rift's rock3.jpg, same as Hoth's problem, same solution.

Hey ZikShadow, thanks for the great post, these are exactly the solutions I had planned to include. The next release (very likely next month) will come in two version, "Full" and "Lite". The "Lite" version will incorporate those fixes aswell a higher compression for all textures. The "Full" version will retain the huge sizes for those environment textures aswell as visually lossless compression settings for best quality.
Also a single .pk3 will be released with only the 4096x4096 fixes, for those who wan't the better compression as in the "Full" version.

I got a problem with exterior floor textures in Hoth, they don't exist.
I only have Movie Battles 2 installed.

I have a major problem with textures. It seems like game just can't handle it's size. I wonder if there are any console commands for Id Tech 3 like "seta com_videoRam" and "seta image_cacheMegs" for Id Tech 4.

I have 1 Gb of video memory.

I tried to delete all the mods except this one, but that didn't solved the problem.

I've used:

Actually I've already finished the game, so it's not a big deal anymore. I just noticed that the problem is only on the big levels like this one, and only in the outdoors. When you get to the base, it's working fine.

It's really strange, missing textures in the outdoor regions is the only error with my pack, I'm still trying to figur out the reason for that - probably texturesize of more than 8000px x 8000px often Hoth and Taspir...

You should probably try to compress them. There is no reason for 8000 x 8000. Even 2048 x 2048 would be enough for this game (of course it depends on the object), if a proper compressing technique is used.

I have a feeling that there is some kind of limit in the game engine, because something like this happened when I used too much mods. That's why I select only these four.

Oh, but they are compressed although I have to keep some balance between best possible quality and compression (artifacting etc.)
Also the biggest environment textures in the game (Hoths Snowy-ground-textures and the canyon-wall-textures on Chandrilla) were 2048x2048 in the first place and looked horrible. So yeah to get them to look ok I had to replace them with such large versions.
And I thought about possible Engine-limitations too, so you have a point there. Strangely enough on my PC everything works fine, but I will create a "light" pack with reduced texture-sizes (stil better thatn the original of course) for those who have the same problems as you do!

I'm not sure about Taspir though. Is it your textures? Upyourpic.org
If yes, then I played with them just fine. If no, then I had to disable them.
I think I should play the game somewhat later, test it again.

I have 2 GB RAM, and 1 GB VRAM.

If it's working fine on your PC, then I don't know what else to say. Try to install a few mods like "Spanki_Jedi_Customization_PLUS", maybe it will help you to track the problem, but as I said, I tried to disable them.

As far as my screenshots tell me first I encountered this problem on Tatooine. The texture of Millennium Falcon didn't showed up for some reason. I tried to reload and that helped.
The second time on Hoth, and as you can see it was a real mess.
And it seems like I had to disable your pack for Chandrilla, which means I had this problem there as well.

Hey Killaine, thanks so much for your feedback regarding this issue, it's highly appreciated! I'm thinking maybe it is a problem with windows 32bit and in that case the engine not being able to adress enough RAM/VRAM or so so that some of the textures don't show up properly? Do zou have a 32bit or 64bit system? (I've got 64bit) Cheers!
oh and checking with the other mods did not cause prblems for me...

Yes, I'm using 32bit system, because I have a pretty old PC with less than 4GB RAM, so there is no reason for me to install 64bit.
