Tip: Make sure you (did) put the shards in the pedestals FIRST before going onto the area ahead to get the next 2 rods. If you didn't place the shards, then slide the lever over (after having put the rods in the machine and pulled the lever in the other room) the monster will kill you, you'll respawn (with the monster right behind you), and if you try to get back to the room with the rods you'll find it's blocked by a 'shadow' meaty web thing with no way to get back to re-pull the lever next to the rods. So you'll need to reload from an earlier point.
