The Great War mod is a total conversion modification for Napoleon: Total War. It aims to create an authentic representation of World War I-era tactics, strategies and general warfare within the game. Watch as waves of battalions advance under the cover of massed artillery barrages and deadly poison gas, or stay play it safe hidden behind their defenses. Machineguns will brutally mow down uncareful attackers and defenses are manned by thousands of troops, armed with rapid breech-loaded rifles. SMG Infantry, flamethrowers, snipers and elite Stormtroopers are a few among the many units that attempt to break the stalemate, while the sheer industrial output of all combatting nations - and the density of forces along most fronts - ensure that advances are measured in metres, not in the grand distances of earlier days. Commanders must learn to control massive battles, where audacity and wit must overcome seemingly impossible odds.
Dreadnoughts rule the waves in the grand collisions between the world's mightiest navies, while cruisers and destroyers launch raids on ports and merchant shipping, gradually forcing nations into starvation and resource shortages. Battles are carried out at long ranges, with the biggest metal titans bolstering an impressive and unprecedented firepower.
The artillery barrages, huge explosions, clouds of dense poisonous gas and the sheer scale of battles help create a feeling of awe and truly exposes the capabilities and wonders of the Warscape engine. Watch battalions evaporate under withering shelling, melt away in poison gas or be turned into piles of corpses in front of enemy positions in the enthralling 3D land battles.
Rule at the head of any of the many countries that watched Europe become engulfed in war, lead your nation however you want in a free sandbox campaign, or follow the path of history in our new heavily scripted campaign.

Patch 5.1.4 released!

We're happy to announce the release of our 5.1.4 hotfix. While the changes were originally intended for 5.2, we felt that some of these improvements were too significant for us to needlessly hold on to it. It doesn't fix every bug reported, but it should improve your mod experience nonetheless.

A few notes:

  1. If you're having trouble unzipping the download folder, try this mirror.
  2. If you have B-DizL's mini-mod installed, uninstall it. It may conflict with some of our new changes.
  3. While a campaign restart probably isn't required to see most improvements, the patch will not take full effect unless you start a new game.

Major changes:

The key change in this update is that autoresolve imbalances are fixed: artillery and machineguns no longer have ridiculous autoresolve advantages. This bug has plagued TGW since some of its earliest updates, and long-time fans will surely be pleased to say "good riddance" - myself included.

This change appears to have some significant propagative effects on the mod in general. In battles, we see an AI which now targets all of your units, rather than just artillery, and possibly better AI tactics overall. We also expect that the issue of spontaneous routing has been fixed.

In the campaign, several campaigns have shown a much stronger Germany (
see teaser), which typically holds its own against France and Russia. Austria-Hungary has seen similar improvements, and, along with Russia, appears to be more active than before. This effect may transfer to other nations that may have been hampered by unfair AI vs AI battle resolution.

Finally, we've tried to locate and address some of the campaign crash bugs. One of these has been definitively fixed, and campaign play-throughs by the team have not resulted in any crashes. However, some of the areas where users have identified problems, such as the improved field gun technology, don't appear to have any problems associated with them. We're therefore not sure to what extent campaign crashes have been reduced, but please let us know if you used to have problems and no longer do.

good mod from what I saw of it so far. However, when the game crashed and I tried to restart I get the error message as follows;

"The Mod could not launch successfully"
"Error: No packs in mod folder"

Also, I tried both links to the patch, but both pages won't load - I'm using google chrome; just says page not found on both links.

Finally, I have a lot of money to spend, like 250,000,000 the game generously gave to me about 20 turns in from trade... I've seen it mentioned here before in the thread as well.

Hope you can help.

I rebooted, and got the link and downloaded the patch and applied it. Restarted the game and it worked. Although it crashed a few times since, I blame TW, as the original crashed more often than this mod...

Now some comments for the developers;

1) I was amazed when outgunned, the AI retreated to a hill with guns and tried to kill me. No suicidal runs at my guns for no reason. Is this TW? Well done.

2) very realistic sound and action. I tried it with headphones on cause the missus was annoyed at the howitzer/mortar rounds whizzing through the air. Well done! anyone who annoys my missus gets kudos in my opinion!

3) love the little biplane flittering across the campaign map. Nice touch.

4) All round good mod. I started on normal, then switched to very hard, as it was too easy (I play Rome II on Legendary). Good to see the AI trying to initiate attacks and probing weak points and flanking where it can.

Now for some recommendations;

1) Naval needs to be improved. How can a couple of light cruisers and cargo ships easily take out my dreadnought? I barely got a shot off and was sunk, so I suspect the armor allocation was not as it should be. Also need to update the ships to modern, rather than classical 18th century sailing ships.

2) What is it with the tanks? You know they are useful on the battlefield in WWI as they should be, but they are so damn slow, and as reported by others, they disappear from your troops once the battle is won on the campaign map.

3) You need to flesh out the descriptions of various units and research a bit more, and check spelling! I'm happy to pass on the spelling mistakes if you wish.

All in all, I'd rate it 8.5.

You need to use Napoleon mod manager, place the "packs" folders in the napoleon Data folder and ini the NAPOLEON MOD MANAGER, then click on all the pack folders, save, and play, that's it

Ok it works. IS there a way to change faction objectives somehow like it was possible in RTW and MTW? Most of countrie's objectives are ahistorical. For example as Serbia I don't want to go to war with Romania and Greece, but also if you've made distant regions like Transylvania or southern Greece be a historical objective for Serbia, why not neighbouring zagreb? it's actually the only region that would be historical to get as Serbia and it isn't even an objective. Very sad there's no Bulgaria, I guess it's because of map. Will it ever be possible to modify the map and regions?

I am giving this mod a 10, not just because I know it will be amazing. But because of the hard work and determination that the developers have put into this mod. 3 Years of incredible work.

Not just that. But also with the troubles on release day they have worked all day and night trying to get it working. For this they have my utter most thanks and gratitude.

I can't find out how to install it and I read the read me file and I did what it said and it still doesn't work it looks really cool but I just can't play it because it won't' install. :/
