The Great War is a modification for Company of Heroes meant to bring the war two decades earlier. This mod focuses on the later years of the First World War. Currently the two teams will be the British Expeditionary Force against the German Empire, however with time the team will try and bring some more nations in, such as France and Austria-Hungary. This mod will focus or realism but keep the game balanced enough to make it enjoyable. Things to look for in the mod are the famous artillery strikes and the infamous gas attacks. Trenches will provide vital cover for infantry while tanks will roll over the battlefield and instil fear into the enemy troops.
This mod is frankly superb. I don't know what else I can say on top of what everyone else has already said but frankly this is the finest CoH mod I've played. I am looking forward eagerly to the inclusion of other armies, especially the French, and more maps.
Well done firstly, but there are a very important issues to adress here. One thing being it's the same fast paced game, bolt actions rifles old technology. Another point, 2 artillery gun max? Seriously? Artillery is a huge part of WW1 and you barely touched on it. Costs are another issue. The costs are way too high for as useless as the units are, the AI can spawn em faster than you can and you're done. But I expect an updated release will ease that. I'd suggest dropping everything 100 man power. Also the trenches are really glitchy, most units cant figure out how to get in for at least a minute. The lack of arty is laughable and the lack of variety is awful. Please fix and you'd get a 10/10
This mod is great. The new feel of the mod, with the change in pace to WW1 standards, is refreshing considering how many WW2 RTS games there are. The trench system is great, as it is easy to design impressive trench systems. The focus on infantry/artillery play is also nice, as the vehicles in this mod are extreme late game. That said, this mod has a black sheep;
At the moment I am writing this review, I noticed it causes problems with my Eastern Front Mod for CoH. Now, some might be saying, it could be random. Well, I tried both my EF mod and my EF ostheer beta mod, and both suffer lag issues and crashes. I have an aleinware, so my computer isn't the problem. I suspect that it is in the mod's coding, altering the base CoH game, thus making the EF mod laggy, but it worked twice before.
Overall, an excellent mod, but due to the possibility of hurting other mods out there, I have to give it an 8/10.
héhé nice ! my little opinion :
+ nice buildings
+ nice vehicules
+ infantry die realist (easily with hmg or vehicule fire)
- usa look a bit favorised (tank more strong, artillery have more long range..)
~+ cant wait more from this mod ^^
finally this mod is very good, nice models and all , and soo damn crazy on big battle with all this HMG shooting everywhere (infantry,tank,bunker) lol ^^
good work ! keep up ! very good start ,i recommand this mod !^^
Ultimately, whether you decide this mod is a 9/10, or a 10/10 really falls to one reason. Whether or not you're expecting things to be trench-warfare heavy.
I went in expecting a combat system that is parallel to your typical Company of Heroes gameplay, but hoping for a brutal war in which my opponent and I would establish lines, and basically sit in a stalemate until the heavier weapons come out.
What I found was that the mod gave a nice mix of the two. It is possible to entrench yourself deeply, and try to repel invaders - machine guns and flanking taking a far more critical role than in the original CoH, but it's not exactly encouraged. Trenchlines take a long while to set up, and as CoH is played, your opponent is constantly pushes on your points while you're trying to establish defenses, making it far harder to bunker it down into trench v trench with NML in between.
It's still fun, though. The units are nicely balanced, and each nation's doctrines are taken into consideration. It's just not what I was hoping for.
Love the concept of trench warfare (even though there is no trench warfare against AI) and the World War 1 atmosphere, it really gives a whole new perspective to the game. Although there are still some bugs, they can be fixed through time.
