The Great War is a modification for Company of Heroes meant to bring the war two decades earlier. This mod focuses on the later years of the First World War. Currently the two teams will be the British Expeditionary Force against the German Empire, however with time the team will try and bring some more nations in, such as France and Austria-Hungary. This mod will focus or realism but keep the game balanced enough to make it enjoyable. Things to look for in the mod are the famous artillery strikes and the infamous gas attacks. Trenches will provide vital cover for infantry while tanks will roll over the battlefield and instil fear into the enemy troops.
As somebody that rarely sees anything World War I-related whilst still being a huge fan of World War I this mod fills a large, empty void that could not be filled with all of the World War II games currently floating around (However much I had enjoyed vanilla Company of Heroes pre-Third-party patch fuckup as well as a plethora of good World War II-centric games namely Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm.), and without there being another game or gamelike entity to fill this void until "The Somme" is released whenever it is released (Sadly, the massive "The Great War" mod for N:TW does not fill this void sufficiently enough. I have found this to be one of the smoother mods I have bothered with, and it was fairly free of bugs and incredibly well made and stable and nothing brought a bigger grin to my face than using the leichte-Feldhaubitze 16 to blow British emplacements to pieces, or using the Maschinengewehr Modell 1908/15 suppress Gordon's Highlanders as they screamed obscenities at one-another in a Canadian accent, eh?
The modeling and texturing is just amazing, as is the custom animations for things such as the Mark IV and A7V "Sturmpanzer". The idea to replace the Gordon's Highlanders skin's voice with a refreshing Canadian accent was wonderful and well-received.
After hours of play, I had only found one flaw; however this flaw almost seems too good to be true. Once the battle draws to an end, the A.I. will begin exclusively using whatever armor it has available, seeming to forget that it has infantry, mortars, anti-tank guns, et cetera. This mod is incredibly well-done, and almost deserves to be its own game.
To summarize, this is an astounding mod - one with few flaws, and immense amounts of enjoyment for the discerning World War I fan. With any luck, this mod will continue gaining popularity and will continue adding more and more wonderful features.
Pretty damn fun and more brutal than vannila COH. The Trench system is amazing and its great to play on a LAN with freinds. Easy install too. The tanks are amazing they managed to get multiple guns working on them properly which is cool. There's also melee combat where they pull out a melee weapon and whack someone with it. It uses a throwing animation for melee but meh points for trying and it might be hard to pit in more animations. It still looks convincing. They don't use their bayonets which is a shame. I like the no population cap mode too. Both nations are very defensive and I've had to rely on mass charges of infantry with lots of mortars and artillery to do anything which I suppose is how much of the WW2 combat worked.
Amazing mod and I can't wait for the French.
A very professional, well designed and executed mod, The Great War 1918 provides a look at the "war to end all wars" while remaining a strategically challenging and competitive design. Total conversions are always impressive, but the execution of TGW is outstanding.
A truly amazing mod. I've played all of the major COH mods, from Eastern Front to Blitzkrieg but this might honestly be my favorite. What makes this mod stand out to such a degree is the way in which it takes the familiar platform of Company of Heroes and makes it new again with a fresh emphasis on large infantry formation tactics and artillery. The sound effects for the rifles and the pistols are very satisfying to listen to. The models and textures for the units are similarly impressive.
I do want to draw special attention to the greatest accomplishment of this mod: The ability to dig proper trenches. This feature was sorely lacking in the original game and it's good to see my dream for this game finally come true.
I am really impressed with this mod and sincerely hope it's developers continue to work on it. I'd love to see what they do with the American Expeditionary Force as well.
An impressively stable and bug free release of an equally impressive mod that nails most if not everything i sets out to do, from the new thrench system to the gas attacks.
Even the two factions(as of now) seems to be fairly well balance between eachother, allthough the enemys damn Mortar allways seems to outreach mine, this could be completely imaginated from my part of course.
The new tanks are also slow sluggish and deadly, wich is very spot on, oh and the Tank models are also very well done.
The same can also be said about the models for the various infantry and support units on both factions, and the new threnches is also very nice and well suited for me as a defensive player.
Overall a very promising start from a Mod and Mod team i wish all the best.
