There's lots of reasons but it really comes down to features. Zero Hour isn't flexible enough for this kind of game design.

A lot of features that would need to be hacked into Zero Hour are actually supported natively in Starcraft. Anything that's not supported can be added with code.

It's also a better, more modern engine. Many features are at least a generation more advanced. There's about a 10 year difference between the engines and it shows. SC2 supports much better pathfinding, it's better optimised, the UI is more responsive and better in a lot of ways.

I know people love ZH, I do too, but it's not able to support this crazy new design. Don't worry though, you can get the free version of SC and play the mod without having to spend money on a game you don't want.

Description

Early demo showing development of the Blitzkrieg 2 mod on the Starcraft 2 engine.

This demo shows the new Hex code.
Hexes will search to try and find a link to their HQ
The green+orange player's HQ is in the bottom left of the map,
The blue player's HQ is in the bottom right.

The green+orange hexes to the right are isolated at the start but the player's attack restores connection and severs the link to the blue player's northern hexes.

The blue player then is able to counter attack and restore connection to the north...

The code is a very early WIP with placeholder art. Enjoy!
