THE DARK MOD was once a total conversion of Doom 3, and is now a STANDALONE GAME with the release of TDM 2.0! A dark and moody stealth game, inspired by the Thief series by Looking Glass Studios.
This is what Thief 4 should be. The mod actually improves on Thief 1 and 2, and it's not a small feat, believe you me. It is harder, the AI is more intelligent and reacts in better ways, the mantling system is a real improvement and the lockpicking is made even more interesting this time around with this sound mechanic. While the universe isn't canon for legal reasons, it is still very faithful to the originals and The Dark Mod is a game every fan of Thief should have.
Finally got my paws on a copy of Doom3 and have installed THE DARK MOD.
While teh download was downloading i was checking out reviews of some of the missions, I do like intense, tight, and pressuring mansion/big building style missions so i got a farely large handful.
Anyway. The dark mod! I was so eager to play I forgot about the training mission, played the other one, the thieves den.
After choking maniacally for about 10 mins my mission finally loads. WOW this looks sexeh.
Damn, those rain effects are too pretty. Far too pretty. I'll put up with that. Lets see how the sword fight pans out, block like this aye? Shwang! clang, cling! Yeahh! I can do this! Thump, thwarrk, Fail.
Ok, round 2, arrows. The element of surprise will favour me this time. That guard took four of em! He's still up and now he's hunting for me, I'm backed into a corner waiting for him, sword at the ready. utside, then I close the door. And silence! WOW yes! This is thief! Oh yes, I peed a little bit just thenEager I run up to him, Err swing? No, err let go, oh thats it! damn how to block again? Fail no2.
Right, this time! He walks back and forth aah I see now, bonked him on his head. Flumped over. Yay! Vict000r!
Right, check the area now.. Look around trying every door imaginable twice over, hmm.. Lets see, figure out this map thing... climb over here... I see.
Ah, the ledge right ok Mantle up, jimmy onto the wall do I mantle this fence now, ah fail 3. The fence killed me! I'm learning, I'm getting there!
Now I got it, bonk the guard mantle up the fence only HALF kills me this time, yeahh pr0, see this Woaa theres a someone underneath me! crouch round this side of the wall, drop on the floor and bonk this one aswell, Ooh Yoink the purse!
In we go, and what beautiful sound effect transition from the outdoor rain, to indoor hearing the rain outside, then I close the door. And silence! WOW yes! This is thief! Oh yes, I peed a little bit just then.
For a thief fan like me, The Dark Mod is all and more that I could ask for.
Since Thief 2: The Metal Age, modders and mappers have been stuck with what today is out of date tech to create fan missions and getting their sneaking fix.
The Dark Mod breathes new life into the Thief modding community and brings it into the next gen video game realm through Doom 3's id Tech 4 engine.
The people behind the Dark Mod have done new scrips, new AI, new textures, new models, new music, new gameplay elements, voice acting(Benny!).. So much new content coming together to form a tool set which modders can use to create their fan missions and share it with other Thief and stealth fans.
And all of it feels just like a Thief game should feel, down to the sound of your feet slowly creeping across the cobbles... The tension as you carefully peek around the corners of a seemingly empty corridor.. And the frantic panic as you flail your sword at your opponent, while at the same time dodging the powerful blows of the warhammer crashing down upon you.
As far as mods go, this is the penultimate step of a total conversion, before it could almost be called a totally new Thief game in its own right.
But who needs a new Thief game, when there are so many new stories waiting to be told, missions to be created and experienced in The Dark Mod.
