Stealth Gaming in a Gothic Steampunk World

** The Dark Mod wins PC Gamer's 2013 Mod of the Year award! **

“It’s a tremendous achievement – a detailed tribute to the Thief series…. Projects like The Dark Mod are a way for those fans to say “if you won’t make it, we will” – to deftly lift what was good and meaningful about the games that inspired us years ago and run away with it.”
PC Gamer

“this is splendid….it’s basically Thief…but in Doom 3.”
–Rock, Paper, Shotgun

THE DARK MOD was once total conversion of Doom 3, and now is a STANDALONE GAME with the release of TDM 2.0!

A dark and moody stealth game, inspired by the "Thief" series by Looking Glass Studios, The Dark Mod includes creative new gameplay features, dozens of unique AI, and a complete set of custom art assets, allowing players and mappers alike to enjoy missions in a gothic steampunk universe. When you play The Dark Mod, you feel like you’re playing a gothic stealth game…there’s nothing left that’s recognizable from Doom 3.

This game is first and foremost a toolkit, allowing fans and team-members to create their own stealth missions in a gothic steampunk environment. But there are already over 80 full missions for download, including some small campaigns, so it certainly feels like a game. The only difference is that you have to choose which missions to install and play.

Setting:

The Dark Mod world can be viewed as an alternate version of our own. It is a mixture of several historical periods, with architecture ranging from medieval castles to Victorian mansions. In this world, steam and clockwork technology were discovered much earlier in history, allowing for odd inventions and industrial warehouses to exist side-by-side with Gothic cathedrals and sword-wielding city watch.

Editor:

We also maintain our own mission editor, called Dark Radiant. It is an updated version of GTKRadiant, and has a lot new features (Python scripting support, many bug-fixes, new Particle preview, Texture Tool etc.) and comes with a number of Dark Mod related plug-ins like an Objectives or Conversation editor.

Images for TDM Campaign: The Crucible of Omens

Behind Closed Doors

(Crucible of Omens Prologue)

After more than 4 years of development, the first mission from the Crucible of Omens campaign is out. This mission itself didn't take 4 years but rather it is one that emerged from materials culled from the other campaign missions. Far from being wonky scraps, the resultant mission is actually as large or larger than most of the other in-progress campaign missions. It is also far more polished so the team will need to work that much harder to match it's quality.

This mission easily demonstrates the larger size and scope that Thief 1/2 players were hoping to see from Thief: Deadly Shadows so it caps another milestone in The Dark Mod's inclination to illustrate what Thief fans wanted from a new Thief style game.

there are some steam haters in the team so it may not happen. Funny thing is they buy steam game when they see good discounts.

Steam is riddled with issues. I've only bought two games and its problems are already so very apparent to me.

"Verifying integrity of game cache" is broken and always fails to verify some files and forces you to redownload them even if you know that the verification is erroneous. One of the games I bought forced me to redownload 2.2 GB after verifying the cache and I had to download that chunk of files twice because the first time I used this function I thought it wasn't broken so I tried it again.

There is no option for something as basic as rolling back updates in case the latest patch for the game breaks compatibility with your system or the mods for the game you wish to play. Once you install the update, you can never go back even if you uninstall and redownload the game because you'll be forced to download the game with the latest update. The other game I bought received an update which caused significant performance drop in my system, I have no way to undo the update and now I can't stomach to play the game.

Any type of platform that takes away control from the user of the software he purchased is bad, and Steam does plenty of that. I would have been better off had I pirated the games I bought from that service instead.

I'm not a Steam hater but I must admit that I have mixed feelings about them being a "gateway drug" for popular acceptance of DRM. Yes, I must admit, if we are forced to have DRM in our lives it should be as well designed as the Steam version... I think the Greenlight thing might happen. I just need to read over the legalize of the TOS with our resident legal man and start moving on it.

As much as I hate DRM, I cannot stress enough how good of a platform. It has become a pinnacle to the gaming community, fostering independent gaming growth and treating the consumer better than any other platform. If Steam is the best bet against piracy, so be it.
Steam is as strict as I think DRM should go, however, and I think there should always be games with DRM-free alternatives. Not every game, but some.
I'd say that instead of Steam making me accept DRM, it rather makes me expect and demand more from DRM platforms. For example, you take away my right to launch a game without hassle and install it on as many systems that I want, how are you going to compensate for that?

Maybe it's just me but the Standalone feels much better than the previous mod. Congratulations! Is there a list of best missions (non horror) somewhere?

Here's a thread:

Forums.thedarkmod.com

the list might need to be updated because Requiem and Lords and Legacy are quite good too.

I will open a thread about non-horror missions.

That said many missions run the gamut of themes which includes some horror\undead areas (just like Thief 1). Even amongst the Top 10 horror list, many of the listed missions have significant non-horror portions.

Thank you. I started with A Score to Settle. Have you ever though of making an unlock mission system instead of putting all missions available at once? For example finishing a basic mission unlocks another one (or more) with a bit of higher difficulty and so on. It serves as reward and continuity and for beginners like me is better this way. Even if the missions are not related.

This game is just awesome. I played some time ago when it still was a mod and actually wanted to make a map, but just have no time. I have heard that it's stand alone now, but couldn't get myself to download it and give it a quick run around... guess I would get addicted too quickly.
When I was going through the latest edition of the "gamestar" magazine they had an article covering stealth games, cause of the next Thief. On the last two pages they had a nicely pictured review of your game... thought I would link it here: Gamestar.de

Thanks Bliccer! I also hope that you catch a few minutes and get a chance to make a mission. :)

Great mod, must play for all thief fans. Contains great, userfriendly editor (To tell the truth, this mod is mainly the editor, and fans are making FMsĂș and a lot of super missions. Try it and you will be surprised.
