Stealth Gaming in a Gothic Steampunk World

“this is splendid….it’s basically Thief…but in Doom 3.”
–Rock, Paper, Shotgun

THE DARK MOD is a total conversion of Doom 3inspired by the "Thief" series by Looking Glass Studios.

More like a professional game release than a mod, it includes creative new gameplay features, dozens of unique AI, and a complete set of custom art assets, allowing players and mappers alike to enjoy missions in a gothic steampunk universe.  When you play The Dark Mod, you feel like you’re playing a gothic stealth game…there’s nothing left that’s recognizable from Doom 3.

This mod is first and foremost a toolkit, allowing fans and team-members to create their own stealth missions in a gothic steampunk environment. But there are already 60 full missions for download, including some small campaigns, so it certainly feels like a game. The only difference is that you have to choose which missions to install and play.

Setting:

The Dark Mod world can be viewed as an alternate version of our own. It is a mixture of several historical periods, with architecture ranging from medieval castles to Victorian mansions. In this world, steam and clockwork technology were discovered much earlier in history, allowing for odd inventions and industrial warehouses to exist side-by-side with Gothic cathedrals and sword-wielding city watch.

Editor:

We also maintain our own mission editor, called Dark Radiant. It is an updated version of GTKRadiant, and has a lot new features (Python scripting support, many bug-fixes, new Particle preview, Texture Tool etc.) and comes with a number of Dark Mod related plug-ins like an Objectives or Conversation editor.

The Dark Mod

Standalone Progress Report

Standalone Article

Rest assured that we’re still working hard at getting TDM ready to go standalone, which means that you will no longer require Doom 3 in order to play it. Before we can do this, we need to make sure no Doom 3 assets are being referenced by TDM anymore, so most of our time since the release of 1.08 has been spent making replacements for those assets. It’s a great deal of work, as there are sounds, textures, models, particles, and even animated characters that need replacing.

I can tell you that work is progressing well, however. Several members of the TDM community have chipped in contributions, including sounds from Simplen00b and plasticman, models from RPGista and Baddcog, and textures from SeriousToni and Radiant. Greebo contributed our new zombie character, and Arcturus has been working on animations for it. Mr. Lemony Fresh has contributed an absolutely fantastic new skeleton mesh, and Springheel has replaced all the D3 heads and body parts being used. I think you’ll be happy with the quality of the replacements when you see them.

Standalone Article

We are getting there. I was able to load up Chalice of Kings last night and play through start to finish with no Doom 3 in sight, and no missing assets either. If things continue to go smoothly, we’re hoping for a standalone version of TDM sometime this fall.

In case you’re worried that the next update will only provide replacement assets and nothing else, fear not! Grayman has been coding like a madman, solving dozens of annoying bugs that have plagued TDM from the start, including the infamous “sleepers falling through the floor” and “AI attacking with no weapon” bugs. He has also fixed a lot of AI communication, so AI talk to each other more, and notice when each other are in trouble in ways they weren’t doing previously. He has also fixed some major sound issues, added the ability for archers to switch to melee weapons at close range, created new behaviour for AI who witness someone killed, and so many other things I can’t keep track.

With all the excitement surrounding the announcement of the new “Thief”, we know people are eager for stealth games to play. TDM is proud to be able to help fill that niche while we all wait to see what Eidos has to offer in 2014. The first mission of our upcoming “Unusual Gameplay” contest has already been released, and others are coming before the August deadline. Enjoy!

Since the date this update was posted to The Dark Mod site, 12 missions have been verified to be complete or near complete. Progress can be seen at the following wikis:

Hey there,

It sounds like you're missing a Visual C++ Runtime version, which must be used by one of our components. You will need the x86 versions installed, since it's a 32bit executable (that will change in the future :))

Anyway, one of these should hit the spot, I'm sure you'll need them for other things anyway:
Microsoft.com
Microsoft.com

Should those fail, the 2008 ones might be required, but I think one of those two should work. Our forums at thedarkmod.com are a far quicker way to get help too!

Even though I really hope they do, I'd actually be kinda ok if they don't release the Thief 4 editor. While I do really want it, the Dark mod is probably a more then competent enough alternative - especially now that Doom 3 is open source.

All I can say is great Job, and please add soft shadows :D

Clarifications:

1) The SDK has been free (and Open Source) since shortly after Doom 3 was released

2) The Doom 3 engine Source Code was just recently released as Open Source

3) While the code is Open Source, Textures, Models, Particles, Scripts and other Doom 3 assets are copyrighted and therefore cannot be freely distributed.

You will need to purchase Doom 3 unless you can replace all those Doom 3 assets that we use with "free" versions that are not copyrighted.

Doom 3 is very inexpensive now and it is WORTH IT not only to enjoy The Dark Mod, Hexen: Edge of Chaos, Arx - End of the Sun and other mods and total conversions but also to support a company that contributes it's code to the community and does not burden it's products with restrictive DRM.

Great mod, must play for all thief fans. Contains great, userfriendly editor (To tell the truth, this mod is mainly the editor, and fans are making FMsú and a lot of super missions. Try it and you will be surprised.
