Stealth Gaming in a Gothic Steampunk World

** The Dark Mod wins PC Gamer's 2013 Mod of the Year award! **

“It’s a tremendous achievement – a detailed tribute to the Thief series…. Projects like The Dark Mod are a way for those fans to say “if you won’t make it, we will” – to deftly lift what was good and meaningful about the games that inspired us years ago and run away with it.”
PC Gamer

“this is splendid….it’s basically Thief…but in Doom 3.”
–Rock, Paper, Shotgun

THE DARK MOD was once total conversion of Doom 3, and now is a STANDALONE GAME with the release of TDM 2.0!

A dark and moody stealth game, inspired by the "Thief" series by Looking Glass Studios, The Dark Mod includes creative new gameplay features, dozens of unique AI, and a complete set of custom art assets, allowing players and mappers alike to enjoy missions in a gothic steampunk universe. When you play The Dark Mod, you feel like you’re playing a gothic stealth game…there’s nothing left that’s recognizable from Doom 3.

This game is first and foremost a toolkit, allowing fans and team-members to create their own stealth missions in a gothic steampunk environment. But there are already over 80 full missions for download, including some small campaigns, so it certainly feels like a game. The only difference is that you have to choose which missions to install and play.

Setting:

The Dark Mod world can be viewed as an alternate version of our own. It is a mixture of several historical periods, with architecture ranging from medieval castles to Victorian mansions. In this world, steam and clockwork technology were discovered much earlier in history, allowing for odd inventions and industrial warehouses to exist side-by-side with Gothic cathedrals and sword-wielding city watch.

Editor:

We also maintain our own mission editor, called Dark Radiant. It is an updated version of GTKRadiant, and has a lot new features (Python scripting support, many bug-fixes, new Particle preview, Texture Tool etc.) and comes with a number of Dark Mod related plug-ins like an Objectives or Conversation editor.

Sir Talbot's Collateral

"This is a relatively small, but very detailed and polished mission. When I started it over two years ago, I tried to limit the size and scope of the map to a manageable level to get something released sooner rather than later. The basic layout was quickly built and all that was left to do then was to flesh it out. Well, that got a bit out of hand. At some point I decided that it would take me too much time to keep up the level of detail I already had, and asked Bikerdude for help. Of course he said yes, and I honestly believe that the mission would never have been finished without him. He built several extra areas and the end result is really beautiful. Now it's finally done and we hope you enjoy this little addition to The Dark Mod."

Build Time:

  • About 2 yrs

Thanks:

  • To the Dark Mod team and comminuty at large for helping to get this mission completed, and for putting up with all my questions.
  • Story and Readables: Melan, Sotha, Moonbo, Baal and Bikerdude.
  • Additional Sounds: Goldwell
  • Briefing Video: Crowind, Slyfoxx
  • Beta testers: Oldjim, Lowenz, AluminumHaste, nbohr1more, Goldwell, Cookie, Tr00pertj, Grayman, Arcturus, Ungoliant, skacky, Goldchocobo.
  • Additional Resource: Bikerdude & Dram (fire-flies)

Info:

  • TDM 2.03 is required for this mission.
  • The mission available via the in-game downloader.
  • Repeat after me, "Read and explore, Read and explore"

Misc:

  • We have used LOD on a lot of objects in the outside area's to cater for people with low end machines, when in game go the video settings>advanced>Object details and then adjust to suit your system.

Every so often, a "must play" mission is released. Baal and Bikerdude's "Sir Talbot's Collateral" is easily one of the best pure Manor Heist missions in a long time. YOU MUST TRY THIS MISSION!

An indie game? If you mean to sell it for profit, no.

Standalone would be nice, but there is a LOT of doom 3 assets we'd have to replace which would take a very long time and a lot of effort. Plus, the Doom 3 source code isn't open source yet.

It's something we've discussed a lot, only the future will tell.

Are you guys planning on converting Thief 1's or Thief 2's campaign? Because that **** would be so cash, this is rather awesome as it is now but it needs something to connect it, i.e. a campaign :)

No, we can't bring over any Thief content into TDM due to the obvious legal issues. Eidos holds the copyright on Thief, and we'd rather that their crack legal team didn't send us any cease and desist notices (or worse).

As much as we'd all love to see an original campaign, it's lots of work to make them, and I'm not aware of any serious efforts yet. I'm sure it'll happen one day, just don't hold your breath for now. :)

On the plus side, many new fan-made missions are in development. In particular there is a Christmas contest to make more missions (which anyone can enter), and we're hoping that will be quite popular and result in lots of missions to play.

The core team will also continue to put out content updates, some of which may be accompanied by the release of missions which depend on delayed content (like undead, which are mostly working internally but weren't quite ready for release).

I'm still having some problems with some mission files. After placing the pk4 file in the fms folder they do show up in the mission list. However when I try to install the missions they do not appear as the current mission after the game restarts. Is it sufficient just to have the pk4 file in the fm folder?

happycheeze Nov 3 2009, 8:19am replied:

Putting just the pk4 in the fms folder should be enough. Darkmod will automatically make a folder for the .pk4 file.

If it persists, either check this FAQ (http://modetwo.net/darkmod/wiki/index.php?title=FAQ#FM_downloaded_but_won.27t_play) or ask on our forum.

I found that disabling UAC for vista users will allow the fm's to show up. With UAC on, many files can't be edited and saved, etc...

Try turning UAC off.

Great mod, must play for all thief fans. Contains great, userfriendly editor (To tell the truth, this mod is mainly the editor, and fans are making FMsú and a lot of super missions. Try it and you will be surprised.
