Stealth Gaming in a Gothic Steampunk World

** The Dark Mod wins PC Gamer's 2013 Mod of the Year award! **

“It’s a tremendous achievement – a detailed tribute to the Thief series…. Projects like The Dark Mod are a way for those fans to say “if you won’t make it, we will” – to deftly lift what was good and meaningful about the games that inspired us years ago and run away with it.”
PC Gamer

“this is splendid….it’s basically Thief…but in Doom 3.”
–Rock, Paper, Shotgun

THE DARK MOD was once total conversion of Doom 3, and now is a STANDALONE GAME with the release of TDM 2.0!

A dark and moody stealth game, inspired by the "Thief" series by Looking Glass Studios, The Dark Mod includes creative new gameplay features, dozens of unique AI, and a complete set of custom art assets, allowing players and mappers alike to enjoy missions in a gothic steampunk universe. When you play The Dark Mod, you feel like you’re playing a gothic stealth game…there’s nothing left that’s recognizable from Doom 3.

This game is first and foremost a toolkit, allowing fans and team-members to create their own stealth missions in a gothic steampunk environment. But there are already over 80 full missions for download, including some small campaigns, so it certainly feels like a game. The only difference is that you have to choose which missions to install and play.

Setting:

The Dark Mod world can be viewed as an alternate version of our own. It is a mixture of several historical periods, with architecture ranging from medieval castles to Victorian mansions. In this world, steam and clockwork technology were discovered much earlier in history, allowing for odd inventions and industrial warehouses to exist side-by-side with Gothic cathedrals and sword-wielding city watch.

Editor:

We also maintain our own mission editor, called Dark Radiant. It is an updated version of GTKRadiant, and has a lot new features (Python scripting support, many bug-fixes, new Particle preview, Texture Tool etc.) and comes with a number of Dark Mod related plug-ins like an Objectives or Conversation editor.

May Mission Madness!

What if I told you Moonbo was releasing a two mission

campaign follow-up to his acclaimed mission Requiem?

What if I told you that Sotha was also releasing

the hotly anticipated sequel to his new Ulysses series?

What if I told you Bikerdude has just done a

vast overhaul of the No Honor Among Thieves campaign?

Only one of these announcements might bowl you over, now... it's time to faint!

A House of Locked Secrets

Hols splash big

Moonbo has pulled out all stops in this two mission campaign follow-up to his widely praised "Requiem" mission. With peerless architecture, elegant and inventive scripted sequences, top-notch story development, and so much polish that triple AAA studios would hang their heads in shame at the sight of it... "A House of Locked Secrets" is an instant classic and elevates itself to more than just a Dark Mod mission. A must play!

Sotha continues to push new mapping frontiers and using his experiments to churn out some of the best and most anticipated missions for The Dark Mod. For Ulysses 2, he extends his modular building techniques and throws in many new custom character animations and assets. With 3 different play styles, and Sotha's typically devilish AI routing there will be plenty of reasons to reply this mission.

No Honor Among Thieves v3

NHATv3

After spending a great deal of time making "No Honor Among Thieves" ready for 2.0 standalone, a few last minute mod bugs spoiled the release so Biker put his nose to the grindstone and set out to release the most flawless edition of this mission ever to grace the mission database. Not content with just fixing reported bugs, Biker optimized areas in new ways, learned more about the LOD system (and had SteveL fix some bugs for it), re-lit scenes, added new textures, improved buildings to make game-play more varied, added new particle effects, and just plain upgraded this mission in every way possible. Crypts are creepier, Pubs are cozier, Inns are sleazier, Cathedrals are more grand, Forests are darker... More than enough reasons to play or replay this 3-mission campaign.

Question: I uploaded the mod and the fan missions, now what do I do? It says I have no missions installed, so I click on the training mission to install it. But it still says I have no missions installed afterwards. What do I do?

Do you mean "downloaded"?

"It says I have no missions installed, so I click on the training mission to install it. But it still says I have no missions installed afterwards. What do I do?"

Did D3 restart after you clicked "Install this mission"? Also, if you go to the menu "New mission", does it offer you the training mission?

As for other fan missions, you need to manually download them from Thedarkmod.com for now. (v1.03 will contain an automatic ingame downloader).

After downloading a PK4 file, put it into the folder doom3/darkmod/fms/ and then restart the game and the new mission should be in the list of installable missions. You can only have one mission installed at a time, to switch missions simply "install" another one. You can always go back to the first by "installing" it again.

If you have still problems, please post on our forum, we will help you.

Troublesome, when I hit install mappack, it's says its going to restart steam. except it doesn't, it only exits me out of doom 3. When I reenter doom 3, I see the training map under my mod list. What could be done?

Is this compatible with 1.3.1?

Edit: Nevermind. Just read this on thedarkmod.com:

"Q: What do I need in order to play?

A: Other than TDM itself, you must have a copy of Doom 3. TDM works with the steam version of Doom 3 if you can't find one locally. You must also have the most recent D3 patch."

Hey slytrigger,
Please post a little thread over on our support forum (http://modetwo.net/darkmod/index.php?/forum/58-tdm-tech-support/) and we can look at sorting this out :)
Otherwise check our wiki FAQ/Install instructions and make sure you're using the right patch etc.

And on a side note, 1.03 is on track with many new changes/additions ;)

Hi, I'm a big fan of the Thief series and I must say that I'm mighty impressed with what you guys have cooked up.

I'm using tdm_update.exe right now to update my game to version 1.02 from 1.00. It's running at 20kb/s at most for all the files from different sources. Is there any way for you guys to upload any future patches somewhere else (say, right here)? It'll be mighty fine as the wait from playing all these incredible looking FMs is KILLING me.

Hey there dualshock,

If you could please make a thread over on the TDM forums with more details, we're aware of a few crashes that have been patched for 1.03. But it's always of interest to have more details of vague cases :)

Great mod, must play for all thief fans. Contains great, userfriendly editor (To tell the truth, this mod is mainly the editor, and fans are making FMsú and a lot of super missions. Try it and you will be surprised.
