Stealth Gaming in a Gothic Steampunk World

** The Dark Mod wins PC Gamer's 2013 Mod of the Year award! **

“It’s a tremendous achievement – a detailed tribute to the Thief series…. Projects like The Dark Mod are a way for those fans to say “if you won’t make it, we will” – to deftly lift what was good and meaningful about the games that inspired us years ago and run away with it.”
PC Gamer

“this is splendid….it’s basically Thief…but in Doom 3.”
–Rock, Paper, Shotgun

THE DARK MOD was once total conversion of Doom 3, and now is a STANDALONE GAME with the release of TDM 2.0!

A dark and moody stealth game, inspired by the "Thief" series by Looking Glass Studios, The Dark Mod includes creative new gameplay features, dozens of unique AI, and a complete set of custom art assets, allowing players and mappers alike to enjoy missions in a gothic steampunk universe. When you play The Dark Mod, you feel like you’re playing a gothic stealth game…there’s nothing left that’s recognizable from Doom 3.

This game is first and foremost a toolkit, allowing fans and team-members to create their own stealth missions in a gothic steampunk environment. But there are already over 80 full missions for download, including some small campaigns, so it certainly feels like a game. The only difference is that you have to choose which missions to install and play.

Setting:

The Dark Mod world can be viewed as an alternate version of our own. It is a mixture of several historical periods, with architecture ranging from medieval castles to Victorian mansions. In this world, steam and clockwork technology were discovered much earlier in history, allowing for odd inventions and industrial warehouses to exist side-by-side with Gothic cathedrals and sword-wielding city watch.

Editor:

We also maintain our own mission editor, called Dark Radiant. It is an updated version of GTKRadiant, and has a lot new features (Python scripting support, many bug-fixes, new Particle preview, Texture Tool etc.) and comes with a number of Dark Mod related plug-ins like an Objectives or Conversation editor.

Sir Talbot's Collateral

"This is a relatively small, but very detailed and polished mission. When I started it over two years ago, I tried to limit the size and scope of the map to a manageable level to get something released sooner rather than later. The basic layout was quickly built and all that was left to do then was to flesh it out. Well, that got a bit out of hand. At some point I decided that it would take me too much time to keep up the level of detail I already had, and asked Bikerdude for help. Of course he said yes, and I honestly believe that the mission would never have been finished without him. He built several extra areas and the end result is really beautiful. Now it's finally done and we hope you enjoy this little addition to The Dark Mod."

Build Time:

  • About 2 yrs

Thanks:

  • To the Dark Mod team and comminuty at large for helping to get this mission completed, and for putting up with all my questions.
  • Story and Readables: Melan, Sotha, Moonbo, Baal and Bikerdude.
  • Additional Sounds: Goldwell
  • Briefing Video: Crowind, Slyfoxx
  • Beta testers: Oldjim, Lowenz, AluminumHaste, nbohr1more, Goldwell, Cookie, Tr00pertj, Grayman, Arcturus, Ungoliant, skacky, Goldchocobo.
  • Additional Resource: Bikerdude & Dram (fire-flies)

Info:

  • TDM 2.03 is required for this mission.
  • The mission available via the in-game downloader.
  • Repeat after me, "Read and explore, Read and explore"

Misc:

  • We have used LOD on a lot of objects in the outside area's to cater for people with low end machines, when in game go the video settings>advanced>Object details and then adjust to suit your system.

Every so often, a "must play" mission is released. Baal and Bikerdude's "Sir Talbot's Collateral" is easily one of the best pure Manor Heist missions in a long time. YOU MUST TRY THIS MISSION!

So, since this isn't even a mod anymore, and is fully standalone, were there ever thoughts to put TDM on Steam through Greenlight? I'm not sure it is permited, but I think that as it is a free game, there would be no problems. You're also not using any third party content, besides the engine itself, so there should be no copyright issues.
Thoughts?

There's an open discussion on this. Some folks are collecting funds for the entry fee and others are reviewing the Greenlight EULA for legalities.

Here is a discussion, the last I heard Demagogue was coordinating the efforts though (as you will see) this is a contentious subject:

We've got quite a few FOSS warriors in the mix and Valve's pioneering work in getting mainstream acceptance of DRM doesn't sit well with them.

That said, we also have quite a few folks who love the convenience and publicity that Greenlight would give the project.

Greenlight would only increase TDM's exposure, and seeing that this is mainly a community driven/supported project, I believe that the amount of fans developing content for this would increase considerably.

If the problem is really collecting 100 bucks, I bet that everyone in TDM's community would be willing to drop 10 euros/dollars to contribute, at least.
TDM has certainly provided us more entertainment value than that.

Yeah. I don't think the money is as much of a barrier as the license implications it may pose. That said, (personally) these days I can't get my wife to agree to any PC upgrades for gaming purposes or almost any game related funds that aren't for the kids... Don't know if the player-base is in my shoes but I know the a good percentage of the dev team have similar issues (new family responsibilities vs development time and funding)

Can't wait for the William Steele campaign and the official TDM one. This mod.. I mean game (really made progress here wonderfully done!) just gets better and better and now very very well known escpially with all the fans after their disappointment with Thief 4 (or whatever they want to call it), TDM gets the glory & the attention.
