The Citizen v1.1
May 28, 2008 Full Version 46 commentsHis home trashed, his family dead, The Citizen leaves his apartment for the last time. He seeks new friends, and a way to help the human resistance to...
The Citizen is set parallel to the events of the original Half-Life 2. The player takes the role of an ordinary man, pushed over the edge by the oppressive regime controlling his life. His home trashed, his family dead, The Citizen leaves his apartment for the last time. He seeks new friends, and a way to help the human resistance to smash the iron grip of the Combine. What follows is a winding tale of betrayal, determination and grief. Many obstacles lie in his path which require a sleek combination of agility, stealth, intelligence, and sheer violence to overcome.
Originally released in November 2007 and re-released in February 2008, this singleplayer episode is still in the making, and 3 more chapters will be added to the two existing ones.
You can follow the sequel progress here.

Although The Citizen Part II follows the events of this mod, it will be a different download for which we want a different rating as we think it is a big improvement over our previous work. Don't forget to bookmark the new page!

looks fun
This mod looks nice - why haven't I ever seen it announced? Word is you are making a second part. Hope to see that make it to frontpages.
i cant wait for the citizen 2 can you get citizen 1 maps for garrysmod!?!?!? i tryed copying the maps and putting it in my folder it dont work there please help!
We don't own Gmod or plan to give the map files to anyone at the moment, sorry :(
It sounds awesome...Can you make a .exe link/download? I dont like rar files... they make me rawr in anger.
After initially having this mod crash a lot I bought some new ram and it ran very nicely. I thoroughly enjoyed this mod, the maps were really well designed and valve quality, making it a fun, solid mod. There could have been a longer disguise section, and the voice acting was quite bad in some places but on the whole I thought this mod was excellent.
Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
For the sequel we are concentrating, among other things, on making all the voice acting be more consistent in quality. Since many of our voice actors all record independently on different equipment, sometimes it can be difficult to maintain a standard level of quality. But we're learning a few tricks, so you should see improvement next time around.
Basically neither Playbus nor I have been successful at running a stable version of the Orange Box SDK. Too many crashes and bugs for us to find it worth the move. Since The Citizen was HL2 only, we feel forcing players to buy the Orange Box to know how the story ends is not desirable (yes, we know a lot of people who don't own it yet).
We do not discard it for future smaller projects, as this will probably be the last mod of this length we will make.
Moving to the newer engine would only make loadtimes longer (HDR lightmaps and cubemaps, detail textures etc)
You don't need the OB to play an OB mod: as long as you use SDK Base (app218) anyone with a post-HL2 Valve game will be able to run it.
Also, loading times are faster despite all the new tech. If it really is a huge problem just compile your maps without any of the new stuff. :)
Can't comment on stability though. The OB tools are much better in that area than the Ep1 set in my experience.
Post-HL2 means HL2-only users will not be able to run it? Then it's out of the question for now, unless we get good enough comfirmation that everyone who played The Citizen has a Post-HL2 game.
Maps compiled with HDR lighting are quite bigger than standard maps, so I fail to see how it can possibly load faster. The bsp structure would be the same, so would the textures (except you need to load the detail texture filters) etc.
We haven't given the OB sdk a go for a long time, but it might run better now. However, our past experience with it has always been negative.
