After realizing that it would be difficult to make the world of wenda in the unreal engine 3, I decided to use the cry engine 2 that seems to handle huge open outdoors without a problem.
It took me a day to learn the basics of the sandbox 2 (crysis's level editor), I started to important all the assets that where done into the cry engine.
In the other hand, modeling architecture will be easier in this type of engine, since we wont have to worry about the UVs for the light maps to avoid obvious seams and artifacts (overlapping UVs).
The amount of control regarding the weather effects is just stunning, artists can easily setup a specific mood by moving some sliders in the TOD (time of day) editor.
Here are some first tests :

I can't decide too what engine to use... CE2 Looks great and they have awesome community. The only thing seems suspicious to me, is that i have never seen a total conversion mode made for CE2. The core gameplay and genre is always the same as in original Crysis. And another thing, are you aware that there's no level streaming in Cryengine? That means you can't have your world consisting out of many maps like in Oblivion.

Actually there are some total conversion mods out there, check out crymod.com there is a bunch of mods already finished.
In the other hand the cry engine 2 handles very well streaming.
One of the upcoming MMO titles from NCsoft(linage, Aion...) is going to be using the cry engine 2 for example.
There aren't many people who make total conversion mod because importing custom assets into the cry engine 2 isn't as easy as in the unreal engine.
I also think the engine wasn't very popular for modding because of the specs you need to run it when it came out.
Today it is time to look back at such wonderful engine that has a great potential.

That is true choco , sad to say it. But you are right about vast outdoor games on the cry engine 2 , but you shouldn't forget about the unreal engine 3 for indoor games , and close combat simulation . It might have more features than U.E 3 but isn't it harder to develop on it though , because I used it one time , and it seemed harder , I could not even figure out how to put in a simple cube , after an hour I am like no way forget this .

unreal engine 3 is a good, well balanced engine
but if your aiming for outdoors, cryengine is superior to unreal engine
not that its a bad engine, like i said, its suitable to do anything
cryengine is aimed at outdoor, so its better :) but it lacks good indoor support tho, it has it, but there are better engines for that :p
