Tales of wenda switching from unreal engine 3 to cry engine 2.

After realizing that it would be difficult to make the world of wenda in the unreal engine 3, I decided to use the cry engine 2 that seems to handle huge open outdoors without a problem.
It took me a day to learn the basics of the sandbox 2 (crysis's level editor), I started to important all the assets that where done into the cry engine.
In the other hand, modeling architecture will be easier in this type of engine, since we wont have to worry about the UVs for the light maps to avoid obvious seams and artifacts (overlapping UVs).
The amount of control regarding the weather effects is just stunning, artists can easily setup a specific mood by moving some sliders in the TOD (time of day) editor.
Here are some first tests :

That looks gorgeous! Any chance you can get a couple of those screenshots without the text in the corner? I'd love to use one as my wallpaper.

I shopped the other images, did some touch-ups, and sized them all to a 1920x1080 resolution. Here's the link: Picasaweb.google.com
If you want, you can post them on ModDB, choco.

Thanks, and yea changing to the cry engine wont be a problem, since no coding have been done so far. Doing some scripting for the cry engine seems to be easier then for the unreal engine. The cry engine uses LUA language and the unreal engine "UScript\".LUA is more easy to learn imo when I looked at it.

I'll try to get some better quality screenshots for the next ones, these ones where took from the editor, it wasn't even in game with anti-aliasing ^^

Simply has the best rendering engine to date! Unreal can never look as good, but the MSUC and years of documentation makes it more attractive.

While I'm not a huge fan of the Cryengine due to its lack of optimization (ie. I can only run it at medium-high settings for 30fps and it looks worse than UT3 at max settings which gets me 60 fps), your work does look extremely nice. I wish you luck and hope I have a better gaming rig by the time this is released.

If you look at the amount of triangles drawn in a scene from unreal engine 3 which is around 100k to 300k triangles; 500k to 1200k in the cry engine for the same amount of fps, you can easily know which engine is more optimized.
What if we used the same amount of triangle limitation as in the unreal engine ?

I don't care about the amount of triangles. At medium shader and shadow quality the Cryengine looks like shit compared the the UT3 Engine on all High settings. Sure at all High settings the Cryengine looks better, but it requires a more powerful machine than I have.

Actually I'm not that happy that you switch to the Cry Engine 2. I mean this engine is great and looks better, but I'm kinda the guy who likes mod experimenting with "older" engines how far they can go. But well if the CryEngine 2 fits you better, then good luck with it. ;)

You mention Architecture will be easier because of UV's. Unreal 3.0 supports multiple UV Maps for Light Map Baking, you could of just mae a second set of UV's and used those for light mapping .

yea, I know about that, but still struggling with some lightning artifacts and especially seams. And I guess that you know that for every UV island, you get a hard edge on its boundaries when you build the lightning in UnrealEd.
Example, if I made a cylinder, UV it, then bring it to UnrealEd to render it, I would get a lighting seam on one of the edges where I cut the UV map.
Also there is real time ambient occlusion, which is true eye candy for the rendering Architecture.

while i must agree that what you've done on the cryengine looks amazing, i am really deeply saddened you chose to switch engines. i was looking forward to this mod being on the unreal engine. the ut3 engine needs a great mod like this. looks like i will have to upgrade my computer after all....

This engine was among the top three picks for the project I'm working on. Source beat it, due only to its popularity and low system requirements.

Best of luck to you.

Also if you notice, the sun isn't in the same place as in the screenshots, its just the day/night cycle doing its work, I'll try to add a dynamic weather effect later.
