String is a short little custom story made for Amnesia the Dark Descent. You play as Henry, an old king who returns to his once underground fortress. But he soon finds out that those he left behind have been waiting for him all these years. If he succeeds he might be forgiven.

Okay, so, let's recapitulate. I know I gave this mod a solid 10/10 in the past since I fell in love with it and it was one of the first ones I played. I even finished it multiple times from start to finish to explore all the various options/choices it allows you to take just to see what would have gone differently. However, after having played many more Amnesia mods and having gained more experience around the "Custom Story environment" over the course of time, I had to disagree with my own review. So I'll (hopefully) provide a better review now by narrowing down what was - in my opinion - good and/or bad about this wonderful mod.

POSITIVES: As I said in the comments section, it is indeed a very good mod with a unique storyline and a map design yet to be seen in other mods and an original plot which unravels itself in a fast-paced, progressive way by having Henry - your character - listen to his son's recordings and then question himself about his past deeds once he's done hearing them. Every little part of the story plays its own big role which is accompanied by very talented voice acting and very "poetic-like written" notes (I really can't think of a fitting word to describe this, sorry about that). The tension builds rather quickly thanks to the mod's custom music and you can see some neat scripting and unique ideas.

NEGATIVES: Unfortunately, the story's short length and its lack of subtitles really inflict a devastating strike on the mod, since the story progresses way too fast at some points and the voices you hear are distorted, which can leave you scratching your head about what you just heard once the dialogue is over. Not to mention all the countless questions left unanswered at the end. The lack of the antagonist's appearance in-game also leaves the player with something more to be desired, as if something's missing. Something crucial to the story that was supposed to be there, yet for some reason isn't. Also, we never really learn what happened to Phillip. Is he dead? Did he somehow escape? Is he still living down there somewhere? How/why did Richard become a Brute?

Nonetheless, it was both very fun and scary to play (I can assure you, there was no area in which I found myself feeling 100% safe). I think it is a quality mod that could have easily turned into something way greater if only just some more attention and love were given to it. I would encourage everyone to download and play it.
