Actually a constitution class, a constellation class has 4 nacelles and was (if memory serves was developed after the constitution class as a replacement for it) still being used during or just before the TNG era.
Actually the constellation class is meant as an heavy escort for the Constitution class and it´s replacement (Excelsior) were designed as full autarc long range patrol cruisers
in navy terms:
Miranda class, constellation class: DD, CL
Constitution class, Excelsior class: CA, BB
