A lot of those details could have been baked to a normal map, saving far more polies.

We weren't been able to do it. We don't know why. We have normal maps included but the ship is not showing them ingame.

I love the model :), but like Zero said, normal maps are better for an ingame model. Especially having in mind that HW2 has a bad z-buffer, which leads to flickering if two polygon layers lie near on top of each other. So...:
Are you using the correct shader? (matte)
Are all shader channels (parameters) named correctly?
Have you activated shadows in the game options and in the ship file? (necessary to render normal maps)
