Sons of War is a total conversion for the greatest RTS of all times, StarCraft. It’s being developed by SC fans for SC fans, without looking for any monetary profit or fame: we do so because we love our game and want to do something in return. A community project started in September 2006, SoW has evolved from a teen dream to a solid project with solid bases: modding capabilities and limits, cinematic scripts, storyline, unit design and other features have been reviewed intensively to make this a simple, yet elegant and astounding product.

Status Report: SgtHK has left. Here's what's happening now:

Although a lot of hard work has been put into all aspects of Sons of War, it was the renders and wallpapers created by one of our most dedicated members of the team, SgtHK, that gave us any actual attention we received. He set up this page, his renders fill the gallery, and his work made us proud to be working on such an awesome-looking project. But as of yesterday, he has decided to leave our team apparently permanently. Not just decide to stop working so hard on models for us, he has decided to no longer allow us to use the models that he created. This is a pretty major setback. Of course, we will have to make new models for pretty much all the terran units and a few protoss as well. All of his work will be removed from this gallery (once I figure out how). But also, we are left without any capable animators on the team; since the unannounced disappearance of spacesepp (another one of our 3d artists) some months ago, SgtHK was pretty much the only guy who had the know-how to create professional level animations, like the ones you've been seeing on this page. Seeing as it was his amazing work that gave us attention and not the other way around, there wasn't any real reason for him to waste his time with us. It's his amazing animation tests that were being recognized because they were so awesome, not because they were part of Sons of War. It does make sense for him to devote his time to his own ideas and ventures, what ever they may be, or perhaps to a more active mod where his work can get out there quicker. I look forward to whatever awesome stuff he pulls out next. But it does leave us with a considerable setback.

I don't yet believe our project leader, ITSTORRASQUE4U knows about this recent development. But I do believe that the remaining members of the mod are committed to its completion. Many of our members have come and gone, having gotten dissilusioned or impatient with our progress. But there is no reason for our mappers to stop working on a campaign. There is no reason for the mod to end, since the actual modding portion (putting in new units and heroes) of the project doesn't rely on the cinematics. We still can offer everything that was ever offered, there's no reason to stop making a new campaign halfway through its progress. I believe that the project will continue in some form or another, even if it takes years and Starcraft II has already replaced SC/BW.

So. I'm a pretty capable modeler. I can make Starcraft ships and units to a reasonable degree of skill. My computer has limitations and I don't have animation and rendering experiance with 3ds max. But one possible scenario is still that I keep working hard, and I make some awesome battle sequences for cinematics. Because, really, even if SoW ended, that's what I would want to do with my spare time anyway: learn to make awesome 3d battle animations. Because ideally, that'd be a great job for me, so it's definately something to work for. And so we will have cinematics in some form or another. There'll be something to see here, something awesome, though of course less awesome without SgtHK.

So yeah, the gallery's gonna have a little overhaul. I'll try to make up for the losses with some new zerg and toss stuff and new screenshots. I'm working on an awesome new hydralisk model that I'll post soon. Here's a teaser:

That is really a sad thing to hear. Good luck to you guys... if I knew how to do anything 3D I would offer, but as such, there's not much I can do to help. Unless of course, you need someone to develop for the web (not the graphical stuff, either), or need some PR, but I think you have that covered.

Sorry to hear guys, it is always good to make it clear when a new member joins a mod that all content created for the mod belongs to the mod and should not be the persons personal property, since they would not have made the models/textures/animations without the mod anyway. Shame people react like that, like spoiled children. A little more maturity would be nice from some people wouldn't it? If they were modeling for a company, they would not own anything they make, so I feel modding should be treated the same way, as all content is made for the modding community and the mod and not for selfish girly boys to throw their hissy fits over. lol...

Sad to hear guys, but hope you can fight back from this low blow and attract some more reputable team members to help you complete the mod with better quality work than was taken from you. Hope it goes well for you guys.

Actually, most game studios allow the artists to put up their work on display after their titles are shipped. The only limitation is they cannot use their art in other games.

Well, there is definitively somethiong the team is keeping from us, BUT, it is awful that that member not only left, but "self-destructed" all of the work he did for the mod, that was for the mod and serves only the mod anyways (what will he do with them???). It kind of selfish and a waste of art and work.

Well, good luck. If you need more help, I can be a mapper for you, i don't think you need more but if yopu do, you know were to find me. I have done over 10 fully working complex camping maps and another 10 uncomplete, using starcraft extra editor, multiple triggering, unit stats manipulation, storyline with briefings, etc., so I consider myself pretty good at it, and I am willing to serve the poryect (and not take away the maps I make for it if i ever leave). It's up to you, this is not a request, more of an offering...

Anyways, good luck and keep your chins up.
