In celebration of us reaching 1600 watchers, here's a picture of the new Bothan Assault Cruiser, a powerful cruiser available to the New Republic, representing the contributions of Bothawui to the New Republic fleet.
Let's see if we can reach 2000 before release.

Sweet, those things look like they can dish out some daunting firepower if you have a group of them.
Say what you want about the Bothans, but damn they make 'em pretty.
again it doesn't seem advantageous to have the command bridge on the bow. you couldn't see anything around you and it is the first place to get hit.
It doesn't matter that much if you can't see anything since everyone relies pretty heavily on sensors. And it's probably safer than having a small strut in top, especially since they'd orient themselves differently in battles. It's a very common (and canon) design feature.
Jeez the canon books need somebody to thwart that design...
There's not really an ideal place to put a command bridge. Keep in mind all ships have shields, and if the shields go down you tend to be screwed anyways. Also, there's typically redundancies in command areas, and as far as field of view goes there's sensors everywhere. Also, in space you can orient your ship and fly around something however you want; the little command strut things on mon calamari cruisers or obvious command structure of the ISD is hardly more secure. Neither would a real life battleship be.
BSG has a much more sensible design. they put the CIC in the center of the ship protecting it from de-pressurisation in case of hull breach, and also has a lot of other less critical areas near the hull to protect vital systems. Personally i find that makes much more sense :)
Keep in mind they can't rely on shields. In SW if you don't have shields, you are doomed anyway.
Still doesnt change the facts. In BSG they face a projectile based enemy where armor is the most sensible thing. The hull might be compressed or fracture under the stress - having a CIC away from those areas will ensure survival, at least for a while.
Having a shield barrier will not be able to intercept projectile based weaponry like sci-fi wants you to believe. A correct frequency might dissipate the incoming barrage, but i still wouldnt be without a decent hull designed to guide the emitted heat and surplus energy from the enemy weaponry away from the hull or into heatsinks -> hence disabling most of their potency, but still be causing minor damage, hull breaches and metal fatique on the areas closest to the exterior hull. The ship would in most cases survive, and so would a well-placed CIC, unless the enemy decides to use radiation, then theres just about nothing to do.
Besides our eyes can only see objects a few kilometers away. Objects in space are typically much farther away rendering a direct line of sight obsolete. Then there is no longer need for an exposed bridge.
Please don't start a "my favourite sci-fi is better than your favourite sci-fi"...
