Stardate 50893.5. After a year of war with the Klingon Empire, it seems that a time of peace may finally be at hand for the United Federation of Planets. But the war has left both Alpha Quadrant governments vulnerable. No sooner do the negotiations begin than do Federation long range relay stations detect a large incoming vessel. The Borg, the most lethal enemy of humanity, has set a course for Earth, stopping at nothing to assimilate its technological and biological distinctiveness. But while Starfleet mobilizes an immense fleet in the Typhon sector in order to halt this Borg incursion, it cannot ignore the threats to its opposite borders. While officers like Jean-Luc Picard must rush to defeat the Borg, conflict looms at the Bajoran wormhole, a gateway to the other side of the galaxy. Captain Benjamin Sisko must remain at his post at Deep Space Nine in case the totalitarian Dominion, the rulers of the Gamma Quadrant, decide to capitalize on the Federation’s weakness, sending fleets of ships through the wormhole. The Federation must risk all to survive this time of turmoil.
But the Federation is not the only major power in peril. After suffering from a Klingon invasion, the Cardassian Union is dying, its economy weak, its people starving. After months of attempting to single handedly drive the Klingons from his homeland in a stolen Bird of Prey, Gul Dukat and his compatriot Glinn Damar see little chance for survival. But Dukat assures Damar that the Cardassian Empire will recover from this tragedy, to return to the days when the once great empire destroyed all who opposed it. So while the Federation will stop at nothing to prevent an invasion, Dukat invites it, negotiating for Cardassian membership in the Dominion. The Dominion wants Cardassia as a staging ground for its conquest of the Alpha Quadrant, while Cardassia needs the Dominion in order to recover from the war, and more importantly, to annihilate its enemies. Once these forces have landed on Cardassia, Dukat will lead his people under the Dominion flag. But he knows that it will up to men like himself and Damar to see that Cardassia one day claims its independence, lest it be annihilated by the overwhelming power of the Dominion.
Still, no matter how successful in its conquest of the Alpha Quadrant, the Dominion should not rest too easy. Once the Borg have finished assimilating Earth, they will soon move on to other empires, including Cardassia, and ultimately invade Dominion territory on the other side of the wormhole. Possessing a single hive mind, the Borg will press on throughout the galaxy, continuing to evolve as each life form is added to its collective. In order to survive, the Borg must maintain its lack of individuality, its power to hold back to chaos of individual thought patterns. To preserve the collective, all beings, whether of the Federation or of the Dominion, must be assimilated. The last time that the Borg collective met with individuality, it was almost destroyed. Invading the Alpha Quadrant for its very survival, the Borg must assure that such things can never occur again: individuality must be conquered.
“We’re losing the peace,” Captain Benjamin Sisko remarks prophetically, unable to deny the conflict that awaits the Federation. “A war may be our only...hope.”
