The First Featured Update

Add-On Name: Realistic Borg
Author: Draconis
Type: Faction Overhaul

Mother of God.The Federation is gone!!

Allow me to re-introduce Draconis our first mod contributor and fellow member of the Armada 3 Dev Team, Releasing Realistic Borg an insight into how he feels a more realistic Borg should play out as a playable faction, we ask him a few questions around this latest Add-On.

Hi Draconis, Why a new Add-On for the Borg faction?

Basically we felt that some people would find the Borg more interesting if they got to play the Borg as they were in the show minus the endgame episode of course! I really felt that the fans wanted this kind of Borg but it just really would make multi player no fun for those on the receiving end, well unless you like that sort of punishment!

So what have you changed from the original CTA faction?

I basically have spent a lot of time rebalancing their research tree, for example they will now through research be faster, stronger, more ships, more capitals, discounts etc, more bonuses for research it basically emulates a collective response so similar to the bonuses that the AI gets, Though to make it fair i removed the AI bonuses for this sub mod so you don't get a 2x more powerful Borg AI ... that would be bad!

Will you be planning any other Add Ons?

I dont know but i never say never between working on Axanar and this but i suppose if the supporters of this mod have the desire for something i may take a go at trying to fulfill that where i can.

I apologize, as I did not mean to spam.

Thanks for all the help, Schuchart, but it appears as though I'm just making you repeat yourself, which was not my intention at all. I have, of course, watched the "how to" video. I believe I have followed all the necessary steps you've pointed out. My one remaining question pertains to the enable mod text file which resides in the v1.82 mod folder, but outside the STA Call to Arms full mod folder (which contain another enabled mods txt file.) The two text files say different things:
The one outside is: TXT
Version 0
enabledModNameCount 0

The one inside the STA Call to Arms full mod folder says::TXT
Version 0
enabledModNameCount 1
enabledModName "STA3-CTA"

Could that be where the problem lies? Once again, I am most grateful for the knowledge you've imparted. If this is not where the problem lies, I will accept my defeat at the hands of the nefarious enemies of the Federation.

The enabledmods.txt outside the STA Call to Arms folder is what determines what mods are active. Right now, it's telling your Sins not to load any mods.

You need that one to say what the enabledmods.txt inside the STA Call to Arms folder says. You could simply copy+paste the contents from the enabledmods.txt included with the mod into the one outside the mod folder.

Thanks, OmnipotentSnail. Tried exactly that eatlier (copy and paste so the txt file outside the folder matches the one inside,) and still no change. Thanks again to all for the help.

I think that the problem at hand is that you put the mod and EnabledMods.txt inside a folder you/the unpacker created. You will have to put the folder called "CTA" and the textfile directly into the modfolder.

Let me take a wild guess: It crashes after 5-10 minutes into the game?

I have a graphical/stability bug. The mod used to run perfectly fine for me, but now, for some reason, random explosions and weapon hits no longer show their graphic effect, but instead spinning white squares. This happens mostly with the Borg. And when I try to change the graphical options in-game, it crashes. The game also runs painfully slow for the first minute or so after I jump into a saved game. I can't be sure but I think this started after I downloaded the patch. It could also have started after I copied a particle effect file and used it in another mod to see what it would look like (Battlestar Galactica with phasers :P). But all I did was copy the file and paste it into the other mod, so I don't know how that could have caused any trouble.

Try playing around with your gamma settings. Reduce it to half of what it is set at and start a test game. I had this problem myself pre-CTA and lowering the gamm settings fixed it. Might be that. If it still continues, I'm out of ideas.

Schuchart Apr 10 2015, 7:39pm replied:

First of all, it is better to keep the modfolder of Sins tidy. So don't put any other mods in there as long as you have such complex mods installed such as STA 3. Only to be on the safe side.

Second, for fixing the white squares: Try changing the settings under "Effects" to lowest (details, bump, etc), save/apply and the set them back to the desired values/levels. See if that works.

For the alleged low fps during the first minute: Please state the number of opponents, size of the map, size of fleets etc. 1.1 is known for the AI going heavy on the CPU, maybe it takes Sins a while to get all players on par while loading the galaxy file and else after loading a savegame during mid or late game.

Steam occasionally re-downloads the sins exe for me which undoes the LAA flag that you need to set - check that the LAA flag is still active.
