The ability for large Gunboat Squadrons is what makes this carrier fantastic.

Description

A heavily modified variant of the ubiquitous Galor space frame, the Archon-class is the Cardassian Union's primary carrier warship. Equipped with specialised hangar pods along the ship's superstructure, the Archon performs adequately in this role, maintaining and directing a sizeable number of the Union's fighters, bombers and gunships even in the midst of heavy combat. These small strike craft are often piloted by members of the Iron Order, comprised of the finest and bravest pilots in the Union. Unfortunately, these highly capable pilots are rarely given the recognition or respect they deserve.

The Central Command has never given great priority to strike craft, instead preferring to invest in its fleet of cruiser-weight warships. This somewhat casual dismissal of the role these small vessels can play is represented in the lacklustre nature of the Archon itself.

Beyond the skill of the Iron Order, the Archon is a fairly unremarkable warship. Possessing modest firepower and only a fraction of the heavy armour present on other large Cardassian warships, the Archon is often deployed safely behind the main battle line. Its phaser banks, however, have a relatively long effective range, meaning that the Archon can launch its strike craft into battle and offer long range fire support without being placed in overt danger itself.
