Star Trek: Armada III begins with the first stirrings of the Dominion War and allows players to take command of five unique factions, the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union/Dominion Alliance, and the Borg Collective. Explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no one has gone before.
After the terrible loss of ships and lives at Wolf 359 the Federation was left with the realisation that their starship design philosophy needed to change. A lengthy period of relative peace with a smattering of small conflicts with technologically inferior enemies had left Starfleet overconfident even as the Federation's tactical prowess had lagged behind.
The introduction to the Borg served as a blood-soaked wake-up call, and Starfleet started laying plans for a new battle-fleet, made up of advanced ships purpose-built to defend the Federation.
The first result of this effort was the Defiant-class. Despite a rocky development process and initial design flaws, the prototype USS Defiant was launched in 2370. A production run was approved and the Federation's growing number of Defiant-class warships served with vicious distinction throughout the Dominion War, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy wherever they were deployed.
