i figured this was on the to do list! you're not planing to replace the canon ambassador with it though right? i think there is plenty of room for both designs.

i'd like to see a from scratch canon ambasidor done too, and for the add-on, it would be in the original ent-C configuration, wile in the main mod, the late tng version.

the "Yesterdays Enterprise" Design was only released/rushed because they had not the time to modelling this baby out. Its not a replace - it is in fact the original Enterprise C. So I would replace the cheaper one with this beauty for the ADDON (addon!).

the 'original' didn't make it past a painting until very recently. its in no way canon like the actual ambassador that made it on screen. this is welcome to be some other class, but ambassador class is taken.

Oh, thank Vishnu for that! For a moment there I thought you were actually going to replace my beautiful Ambassador!

Would I be correct in assuming that the actual Ambassador that makes it into The Lost Years will be the pre-refit version seen in 'Yesterday's Enterprise'? Saucer further forward, blue impulse engine, old-style bussard collectors, etc.

yeah and JJ's are canon to - so screw the canon. Please add a possibility to replace the Rick Sternbach and Greg Jeins simplified version (or just a tutorial or something).

Many Star Trek fans do NOT consider Abrams' films to be truly canon, no matter what Paramount says. Star Trek belongs to its fans more than it does to them.

Many of us hold these films to be precisely what they are - reboots without any true canon ties to the earlier series and films.

so do I. But you see, in this context "canon" is just a subjective feeling. @fangoriously mentioned that the airing of the vessels would make them automatic canon and so do the JJs. Iam not consider the "Yesterdays Enterprise" as canon no matter what because I know the background of this concept a little better.

It's not THAT subjective. Many fans feel that way about Abrams' films because of the MANY observable instances in which they depart from, break with or utterly defy the original canon. An alternate timeline is one thing, but Abrams' films demand a leap many fans aren't willing to make in order to make the connection.

As for this design, it never went beyond the drawing stage. There would have been hundreds of concept sketches for the Galaxy class in the lead up to the production of TNG, many of which some among us may have favoured over the final design - are they all canon?

To my eye this ship looks more like a proto-Galaxy - perhaps a test bed for testing out some of the tech that would later be utilised on Starfleet's next-gen starships?

its your opinion and I will change this circumstance on my version with a model swap (I hope this isn't to difficult to make). The Yesterdays Enterprise will be "some other class"

no one has to worry weather or not JJ is canon, because it all takes place in an alternate universe. this has no effect on the prime verse at all.

The very idea of "canon" in fiction is somewhat paradoxical anyway.

as apposed to canon in reality? wtf? a long winding story or ip without a continuity it follows is meaningless ****.

Maintaining continuity is important, but elevating elements of pure fiction to 'canon', a word with roots in religious literature, goes much farther.

Perhaps the word 'lore' would be technically more applicable, but there's no need to be pedantic with wording. Abrams' films are as true to the source material as Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters' was to the original tale.

I don't really buy the 'alternate timeline' thing, either. That's just something Paramount said to get existing Star Trek fans to accept it. I view them as reboots.

Personally, the only real thing that bugs me about JJ Trek is that they still used the entire main crew from the original Star Trek series.

The only reason to keep using characters like Kirk, Spock, etc was to milk the money out of any Trekkie's nostalgia.
I would've been somewhat forgiving with it if it was just a silly lil' re-boot similiar to SGU or BG, but instead it was not just "meh" it was downright making me feel like I was being handled as a walking wallet instead of a fan...

Just my personal opinion though, like I wrote above if it wasn't for this part I would've prolly shrugged and enjoyed it as just another Sci-Fi movie with a Star Trek sticker on it.
And if you're capable of ignoring it and enjoy the movies then that's great.

Since being a Jedi is a government recognised religion and the fact that star trek has a larger following than many religious sects I'd say the usage of the word canon is still perfectly valid when talking about any story/universe which has expanded to this depth.

I read to you now from the Book of La Forge, chapter 5, verses 6-11:

"Yay, I say unto thee, that with the coil spanner shall ye calibrate thine flux capacitors. And if thine plasma inducers doth need adjustment, the gravitic calipers shalt ye use. Should thine engine controls bring spite upon you, thou shalt unfuse them with thine isolitic converter. So sayeth the Starship Operations Manual. And remember, good engineering folk, that if thy technicians sinneth against you, that plasma coolant doth liquify organic material on contact, and lo, an 'accident' is easy to arrange."

Amen.

Canon applies to religious literature or, very rarely, secular in the case of civilization-defining literature (i.e. 'The Western Canon'). Star Trek and Star Wars fulfill neither criteria.

The examples you give are of fandoms run amok, or an attempt to compare apples to oranges. Neither franchise was intended to be anything more a way of entertaining people and/or telling some interesting stories. They are not religions. You can ask most of the people involved in creating them if you don't believe me.

personally whilst I won't go into the possible existence of God don't believe in any man made religion (sorry but that is just a personal belief) Maybe this has also coloured my usage of this word but as you said it can be used in literature and is. Think it comes from a Greek word rather than latin anyway. Given the sheer volume of literature in both universes I would still say it's perfectly valid. Its just saying that they are authentic contributions and continuations of the original construction (whatever its origin). Think this is the longest convo I've ever written on a forum ;)

The last two pictures caused me to spend all of last night re-reading Ex-astris-scientia.org and loving it all over again, so thanks for that! This "Ambassador Concept" is looking pretty good too, and to be honest, I think I'm even more excited for "The Lost Years" than I was for the "Dominion Wars"! I've always liked the pre-Borg era ships; exploration vessels reluctantly pushed into conflict.

And cheers to OrionSlaver, you are spot on about Abrams.
