3 out of four, and you've got two more to name in this picture. You're close though.

Excelsior, Akira, Galaxy, Sovereign, Intrepid, Nebula, Miranda, and an unidentified variant of a Miranda class. Soyuz, maybe?

No soyuz or variants of the miranda. Might be a couple of damaged vessels very close to one another with perspective making them look like one mesh?

Yeah. It's an upside-down Miranda. My mistake.

What is the ship in the front there? It looks like a Sovereign class, but the pylons are straight instead of the tapered structure.

Looks like an akira or an excalibur in the front. How long does the debris last btw? I assume it has a fade away time. The debris looks very diverse considering you only have 2 meshes to work with.

you can have up to two unique meshes for each model. not all will have two, but some do.
Yes to the Miranda and Excelsior but no Excalibur in there. They last about 3 mins I think

Love the new pics. Question tho, will the debris correspond to the destroyed ship or is it random? Like wen a akira blows up theres akira debris or is it random?

well I doubt a Defiant would show up as a Galaxy :P

(not randomised, it would look weird)

each ship has 1 or 2 meshes when it breaks up so when you see a debris field you know exactly what died there ;)

We had ship specific debris in SoA 2 at one time. However we hit the dreaded 2 gig limit just with our elite units alone. It was also caused by the volumetric explosions mod. Our mistake was that we used the same sized textures for the damage texture (copied the original texture, and added damage to it). So each ship had double the textures.

That was in the days of Trinity. Rebellion seems to be a bit more forgiving as far as textures (though the 2 gig limit is still there). We never had a shortage of ideas. We did have a shortage of artists.

We've used very small textures for the damaged ships. We've found that even very small ones with the high res bump maps that are already in place seem to work well, and keep the load down.

quite right we used 256x256 textures for damage meshes, also all ships share the same "burn" texture and like Chris here said we used the bump/normal map of the normal ship saving in memory usage, weve also eliminated allot of the stock game assets

we looked into that incidentally, but it just didn't look very good as a static object so we've got something a little different.
