You'll see. ;)

Among Star Trek fans 'The Lost Era', or 'The Lost Years' generally refers to the last few years of the 23rd Century, and the first half of the 24th - those years not covered by the shows.

These years include:
- The voyages of the Enterprise-B.
- Increasing tensions with the Klingons.
- Political and economic strife within the Romulan Empire.
- The voyages of the Enterprise-C.
- First contact with the Cardassians.
- The Betreka Nebula Incident, a dispute which turned into an 18 year long standoff between the Cardassians and the Klingons.
- The Romulan attack on Khitomer and the death of Worf's parents.
- Picard's command of the USS Stargazer.
- The Battle of Narendra III and the destruction of the Enterprise-C at the hands of the Romulans.
- The Romulans entering another period of isolation.
- First contact with the Ferengi.
- A conflict with the Talarians.
- A conflict with the Tzenkethi.
- The Cardassian border wars.
- The Battle of Maxia and the loss of the Stargazer to Ferengi raiders.
- The development of the Galaxy class.

I would assume that the Constitution class refit was still kicking around in that era. *wink wink nudge nudge*
I refuse to believe they'd been phased out just yet.

Ah come on now, don't be like that. Way way back on April Fools there was a very fine Connie model shown at the time simply as a prank, but the model is there. Hell there's probably a bunch out there from various other mods.
I can understand to a point about it not being around in the 24th century despite the widescale availability of Mirandas, but here this is a period of history that this type of ship actually served in.

I don't mean to go off ranting or anything, it's just that it's always been above and beyond my favorite class and here I saw an opportunity for it to finally grace Sins of a Solar Empire even if it was in a diminished role.

Was joking. It's all good.

The last Constitution to be decommissioned was the Enterprise-A in 2293. The Lost Years is set during the period around the Cardassian Border Wars, which started circa 2347.

Most Connies were likely scrapped. At least one was kept in the Starfleet Museum, most likely in a non-operational state.

So yeah, the Constitution class is well and truly gone.

Fear not, though - the Connie will feature in Axanar as the Federation's top-tier heavy hitter.

Would that be the Connie refit? That's the one I love.

And where was it ever stated that the A was the last? What would the Federation have as a heavy cruiser replacement? The Excelsior was still too new and too few as well as being more of a Battlecruiser.

First of all, there were only twelve Constitution class ships to begin with. Hardly the bulk of the fleet, even when they were the pride of Starfleet.

Second, Starfleet started decommissioning Constitution class ships in 2285, citing that they were old ships and that Starfleet felt that the ship's time was over.

Third, by that time the newer Miranda class had begun its run as one of Starfleet's most successful and flexible designs.

Well, they were in service 3 years earlier during the battle of Wolf 359, and there's atleast one occurance of other modified Mirandas being in service during the Dominion war.

Blimey Jonsin! Haven't heard from you in ages! Welcome back!

The Miranda was basically the Nebula class of it's time. Very modular design. The Saratoga is a sub-type, much like the Phoenix or Melbourne are/were sub-types. And as we all know from the countless examples of them being blown up, the Miranda definitely served in the Dominion War, though they were reaching the end of their useful service lives.

the miranda was basically a constitution class that instead of being optimized for for long range exploration missions, was optimized for within border operations, with superior armaments and a very modular aft hull section. so its no surprise there are endless miranda variations, and why the constitution class was just retired at the end of the 23rd century. instead of having its mission profile downgraded and continuing on, because the miranda was already there and designed for that mission profile. its my theory that many of the constellation class were actually 2 decommissioned conies Frankenstein'ed together.

i've always been interested in this time period, especially the later part which includes the galaxy class development, a multi decade hot war between the cardasians and federation that only ended right before DS9 began, and the multiple Tzenkethi wars. i always figured those 'wolf ships' and the galaxy class were a product of that time period of turmoil, so often mistaken as a time of peace by most trek fans.

Description

The Saratoga subtype was a Miranda-class fitted with an Advanced targeting sensor system, allowing for much deeper scans inside enemy vessels. This advantage allowed it to target specific subsystems on larger enemy vessels allot easier which gave the ship a serious advantage in combat.
