I tried to walk from Zaton to Yavon today on foot, went to the Iron Forest where I saw a map icon saying ("Travel to Jupiter?")

I just couldn't reach that point it seemed to be fenced off and impossible to reach. Then I took a guide there from the Skadovsk. On Jupiter, I went up to the brdige across the canal, same problem. Seems as if you're not supposed to travel by foot. Why not? Why is there map exit points at all then? Or am I missing a crucial piece of information here?

Btw never played vanilla COP - went straight for Misery and so far am enjoying it.

Yes you can travel from area to area on foot once your managed to get there first with the pilot.
The way you get from Zaton to Yanov is by getting trough a teleport anomalie thats located further in the back, between the iron forest and the workshoops.
As you get close to that anomalie you can ear its sound and see its light efect on the ground. It will teleport you to a location behind that so called fence, and from there you can get to Yanov on foot. Theres alsow a pretty good stash behind that fence. :P

As indicated above there are locations for traveling between Zaton/Jupiter and Jupiter/Pripyat after a Guide has taken you there once. They show up on the overall map only when you are on that section of the map. The one to Pripyat isn't very conveniently located, but they do save you a few bucks ;-) The one in Pripyat only takes you back to Jupiter, but is very convenient.

Ah thanks. I managed to get to Zaton from Yanov by going under the bridge. Suddenly it asked me if I wanted to travel and I said yes. Conveniently arrived at the Skadovsk. Kind of feared I'd have to leg it all the way from Iron Forest :)

Yeah, the arrival points are all convenient, only the departure point from Pripyat is.

I found the manual route to the Pripyat underground from Yanov. In the big warehouse at the Jupiter plant where the lift is, climb up the stairs to the control tower and jump off onto the big support beams. Travel along the beam until you meet another perpendicular beam on the left, supporting the crane. Run about halfway along here and you'll be transported to Pripyat underground. I hadn't actually been before so my game crashed but it created an auto save for "pripyat_underground'. Can anyone confirm it works otherwise?

why don't you try to load the autosave ? Or try again ? I am still at Zaton, but I'd like to know.

All you have to do is walk down the ramp towards the lift and you will be transported. It works fine, I've never had a crash. I used to have fits sometimes crashing going up the ladder to Pripyat after traversing the tunnels. After I lowered my alife.ltx objects_per_update to 1, I loaded a save at the bottom of the ladder and tried a few times without issue. I know some of the traveling bugs like the Medic rescue are still an issue fixable by lowering switch_distance. Just like the other transport portals, it doesn't show on the map and work until you've been there once.
