Firstly I'll say development has changed drastically than I expected, at first to be a Unreal or Game Maker and ending up with Glest. Then getting a great artist in too help. Truth is how good is the end product?

Game Play 6/10 -

To be brutally honest the end game play is more about hordes of unit fighting, not any kind of 'supreme' unit or tactics. The gameplay follows the same pattern as most RTS games, collect, build, produce, attack, win. Which at first can be fun like most RTS games but over the period of a few matches this can get insanely boring. Over all to add more to the game play something new has to be brought to the battlefield. The maps don't help the gameplay either, with the Glest engine not having the ability of cliffs you are forced into a very open game type where there are no choke points. The A.I do seem to help the game play as the Humans build a huge base where as the bugs focus more on attacking.

The only problem is that its kinda remnant of other strategy games, where you just have to produce more units than your opponent and throw them at him as soon as possible. If the maps were bigger, the action would be, too.

To a beginner this game can be far too hard as it does depend on how you start the game, you must have a quick start and defend your self early on. For 'turtle' RTS players this can be great fun but anyone who likes to be on the offensive will quickly find themselves loosing the game.

Visuals 7/10 -

The graphics have two very different feels about them, whilst the bugs have a very natural look to them the humans are not as half well modeled or textured apart from the Mobile Troopers. The textures for the Human side do need to be looked at and checked over. The animations also do need to be looked at, the bug animations don't feel very organic or natural and general need to be spiced up a little. The effects are not perfect, such as some kind of muzzle effect and blood splatter would be cool. Generally the visual are few and far between, the majority of it is good but some of it does need to be seen to.

Star Ship Troopers: Last Defence is not a game you play for the eye candy. No posh guild houses, where polished armored knights in front await you when playing SST: LD. The Glest Engine doesn't offer a lot of diversity when it comes to mapping, but SST:LD makes the best of it by letting the action build up culminating in one furious and spectacular final battle, mostly.

The maps let the detail down a little as it doesnt include many props or any ground textures. The maps to contain terran but these are not obvious due to the fact there are only 3 ground textures. Maybe just a few more maps with completely different setups would be good enough.

Overall 6.5/10 -

Over all this game can be fun for a few matches and brings something different to play. For a quick development, basic engine and small development team this is a good game. But without all the polished extras SST:LD can not become as big as it could be but is fun for any die hard StarShip Trooper fans.
