It's been a couple weeks since the last client update, so I'm writing this article to let you guys know what has been getting worked on, where it's at, and what's coming up next.
I had to take a few days to work on other projects, but when I came back to AArcade I went to work on the Steam Workshop integration.

Upcoming Workshop Update

This is what I've been working on the past week and it involves a pretty major overhaul of some AArcade systems, which means there will be lots of improvements when this update is ready to go live.Without going into too much detail, here are some of the great features that will start to become reality with the first Steam Workshop update:

  • A Steam Workshop where you can browse, subscribe, rate, and comment on all types of Anarchy Arcade addons including: props, cabinets, items, and maps.
  • A built-in developer asset packing menu for packing & publishing your addons to the Steam Workshop without even leaving AArcade.
  • An easy in-game menu for activating/deactivating your addons.
  • Extremely fast connection times to multiplayer servers.
  • In-game downloading of addon content while you walk around in multiplayer servers.

It will take at least 2 more weeks until this update is ready to go live. Not only is there a lot of stuff to code, there is also a lot of stuff to test. However, this update will also make it possible to implement multiplayer item spawning in the future, so it is worth the effort.

Pending VR & Source Engine Update

Very big and exciting news coming from Valve that they are nearly ready to roll out a Source engine update that will enhance many features of AArcade including virtual reality support. The entire engine branch is actually being upgraded to a newer build, so there will be enhancements across the board.Valve is constantly improving and adding new technologies to the Source engine, and the Anarchy Arcade community being able to enjoy these enhancements is one of the excellent benefits of utilizing Valve's own Source engine.
I will be implementing these updates as soon as Valve pushes out the new build of the engine, which should be very soon. They actually tried it push it out a couple weeks ago, but rolled it back because they weren't finished working on it.

AArcade Community News

Lots of cool stuff has been happening in Anarchy Arcade lately, as the community screenshot section shows. This includes weekly scheduled events held by myself and community members, as well as user-created maps & addons even before the Workshop is ready! I'd like to give a special thanks to Bucky and all the community members for helping eachother out and answering questions on the forum!

  • Anarchy TV: Every Wednesday I host a 24-hour LIVE Twitch stream from within Anarchy Arcade. I give tours of my many many arcades, play games with viewers, watch movie clips, and listen to music all day long. It starts every Wednesday at 4:20am at I also join other people's multiplayer arcades and play their games, as well as host my own server for others to hang out in. There are others who participate in this weekly celebration by hosting their own gaming streams on Wednesdays. Drop in this Wednesday, have some fun, and let me know if you'd like to join the broadcasting crew!
  • Horror Movie Madness: Every Saturday & Sunday in October some community members have organized group YouTube viewings of cult classic horror movies in a custom made 3D environment that they created specifically to host the event. The map features a gigantic IMAX movie screen, tons of stuff to watch, plus a huge arcade in the lobby with hundreds of games & great music to enjoy. The movie you are watching also gets played on many other screens throughout the arcade, so feel free to look around! You can check out their post on the official Anarchy Arcade Steam Community Hub for more info:
  • Addon Cabinet Models: The innovative AArcade community member Vermilicious has already figured out how to create new custom 3D arcade cabinets that you can spawn your shortcuts in. Not only are the props great looking and useful, but figuring out how to create AArcade addons before there is even a tutorial is impressive. If you happen to find your way into a multiplayer arcade that Verm is hosting, you'll also see he's pretty handy at making addon maps as well. Funny thing is, he makes them with Google SketchUp; intersting. You can check out all of Verm's stash in his post on the official Anarchy Arcade Steam Community Hub:
  • Addon Maps: A couple weeks ago the Anarchy Arcade map designer tool, called Hammer, became easily accessible from AArcade's main menu, bundled with a tutorial and some easy prefab to get people started. Lots of people have already started building their homes in the editor, and then building their 3D desktops right inside of those in AArcade. However, the AArcade community member Demitri has been busy not only learning Hammer, but sharing his creations with the community as well. He's been creating some rather large maps for those who like to spawn big props in their arcades, as well as a halloween themed graveyard. Head over to the official Anarchy Arcade Steam Community Hub to check them out:

Upcoming 2nd Kickstarter Campaign

Last year, Anarchy Arcade's 1st Kickstarter campaign to raise the licensing budget and become a retail game fell short of its necessarily high $35,000 target, raising just over $3,500 from the 60 awesome people who pledged towards the campaign.

As a result of not being able to obtain a resale license, expanding the development team was no longer an option and I had to make a lot of cuts to Anarchy Arcade's design in order to meet a December 2014 release date, even though I continued to work on it full-time by myself.

Most notably I had to cut cross-platform and multi-lingual support. In addition, there were gameplay mechanics like the tokens/tickets system that had to be cut, aesthetics like cabinet mounting/dismounting animations for the player character, and other bells & whistles. Instead of working on those features, I shifted focus and worked only on features that the Early Access community was interested in. That way I can get the features that the users want the most into AArcade before it is planned to come out of Early Access at the end of December.

Anarchy Arcade is already a fun & immersive experience, but with the current December deadline approaching it is getting more difficult to take on the larger, more major feature overhuals & enhancements like the ones discussed at the start of this article and still hope to have them polished in time for release.

Anarchy Arcade is now on Steam in Early Access, and as a result more people know about AArcade now than ever before. Many members of the community have voiced their interest in a 2nd Kickstarter campaign to extend the development that they've seen taking place during the 1st month of Early Access. However, this 2nd Kickstarter will have a much different goal than the first.

It will attempt to raise a minimum of $1,000 to extend my work on AArcade an additional month, with a stretch goal of $1,500 to bring on AArcade's skilled 3D artist full-time during this extended development month as well. During this extended month I will continue working on the features that matter most to the Anarchy Arcade community just as I have been during the regular Early Access period.

The extra month will allow more features to be worked in, as well as give Anarchy Arcade a more powerful impact on the Steam Community at large when it does come out of Early Access.

So keep an eye out for Anarchy Arcade Kickstarter 2.0: The Quest to Stay Early Access to launch soon! And party on, dudes!

This weekend I got the YouTube channel spawning into the prototype, along with the ability to spawn all of your Steam Trading Card achievement unlocks. It uses the custom-parsers to put all of them into the 3D world, just like described in recent articles.

After the Kickstarter concludes, there will be 1 more prototype update then I'm going back to working on the Steam version.

Check out tomorrow to see some of the new features in action!

Hey, a question. AA is free right now, the prototype I mean. You keep adding so many things and features in you free time, respect for that! But in time when this is fully released, will it be sold on Steam then, because it's greenlit now? Or will it be free? I really wouldn't mind to throw some little money I have at this and buy it when the full version is released on Steam. But I see that the kickstarter is going slow, wich is a real shame. So if the kickstart fails, what's going to happen? Are you still going to release it on Steam as an Alpha (even tho I'm personally not a real fan of that model, but hey), and use the money you get from this to fund the development of AA? Or is the kickstarter really necessary for the development, and when it would fail will have a detrimental effect on AA? It would be sad to see if this revolutionary project can't be developed to its full potential..

I have been doing lots of updates to the prototype recently to promote the Kickstater campaign and the concept in general.

However, the prototype and the Steam version are two very different versions and actually use different code bases. The prototype is like a canvas where I quickly test out concepts and see how the community enjoys them. Because of this, the prototype is basically a bunch of different ideas patched together with duct-tape. In fact, interactive video screens and multiplayer weren't even features of the original prototype. These types of major features are things that need to be implemented from the very beginning.

That is what the Steam version of Anarchy Arcade is. It is all the features (who's tech is demonstrated in the prototype) built into one tight kick-*** package. Plus it will have all of the new features that aren't even possible in the prototype such as the Steamworks features and multiplayer customization.

The Steam version will not be free, but will be very cheap. I am going for a standard price of $15 USD, but I don't know exactly how much it will cost yet. Remember that stuff on Steam is usually on sale anyways, so people will have lots of opportunities to pick it up for cheaper than that.

There's still a week left in the Kickstater campaign so I am still promoting that for the duration. Now is the time to make a pledge to the Kickstarter and make a memorable impression on the Anarchy Arcade community.

And remember I'll be giving away more free Steam games this Wednesday while playing Anarchy Arcade, 1 every hour for the full 24 hours. I had a great time giving out 28 games last Wednesday and look forward to doing it again this week!

Others have been able to fix this issue by updating their video card drivers and DirectX versions.

I just downloaded this, installed it and derped around a little on it, tho seems no servers for other people show up sadly, would be cool to visit people unless do I need to unlock it?

This idea is quite interesting tho only issues I have sofar is when launching another game or so it will not launch within the arcade, it will open a new window, I know that it might not be able to launch inside the arcade but it sucks when it slightly freezes your screen and or shrinks your window.

I still like this tho, going to be interesting to see what comes of this, would be nice if this was stand alone or so so people without HL2 and etc could enjoy this and invite friends over, show off games and movies, music and so much more, I think what would be neat is if your friends could play your pc games inside of your arcade and all that jazz.

Also how do you import models from the .GCF files from valve (from games like tf2, l4d2, hl2, hl2:ep1 and 2).
(P.S. When I imported 17 maps of rp_ from they slowed down the game... Is there a specific type of map suggested?)
Thank you for taking your time to help me.

You can mount content from many Source engine games by clicking Mount Content on the main menu. The maps from games you have mounted will show up in the Start Arcades screen, just be sure you have Show Addons checked in the Filter box.

Personally I suggest smaller maps instead of massive city-sized RP maps. It's easy to change to a different map, and when the maps are small it doesn't take for ever to find what you're looking for. :)

Let me know if you have any troubles.

Btw, taking a screenshot with F5 will update a map's thumbnail on the Start Arcades screen.
